Women's Basketball Drops Overtime Game to Marist

OAHU, Hawaii - The University of Utah women's basketball team (1-2 overall) led most of the way against Marist here in the first game of the Oahu Classic, but the Red Foxes rallied to force an extra period and escaped with the 70-66 overtime win over the Utes.
It marks the second straight overtime game for Utah, as it just came off of an 81-77 double-overtime home loss to then-No. 5 Stanford on Sunday. Marist improves to 4-1 on the year.
"There weren't many positives we could take from this game," said head coach Elaine Elliott. "First of all, Marist is a good team, and this is one of those games that could go either way on any given night. But, this should've gone our way.
"I'm not happy with the way we're finishing. We're not finishing tough, we're not making plays, and we're letting the other team make the play. I'm not happy about that."
Leilani Mitchell was one of three Utah players with double-figure points. She led all Utes with 24 tallies on 8-of-13 shooting. She also had six assists and one steal.
Jessica Perry recorded her second double-double on the year. She tallied 12 points (6-for-9 shooting) and 10 boards. Nine of her boards were on the defensive end of the court. Morgan Warburton chipped in 10 points and Kalee Whipple added nine.
The Utes out-shot their opponent again, 44 percent (26-for-59) to 37 percent (23-for-62), but they were out-rebounded, 39-35, by the Red Foxes.
Perry's 10 boards tied for game-high honors with Marists' Rachele Fitz. Fitz also led all scorers with 26 points on 7-for-16 shooting.
Marist took its first lead of the game since 17:51 of the first half as Fitz hit a pair of free throws to take the 61-59 at the start of overtime. Marist would never trail again as it saw its lead bump up to five points, 66-61, with 2:38 left. Mitchell's three with two minutes left on the clock cut the Red Foxes lead to two but Utah could get no closer as Marist held on the four-point win.
It was a back-and-forth game at the onset as Marist held the 9-7 lead with just over 17 minutes left in the first half. But, Katie King's jumper sparked the Utes' 13-0 run, and it gave Utah a commanding 20-9 lead. Marist fought back, cutting it to 22-21, but Utah was able to pull away once again as it went on 6-0 run to make it 28-21. Marist scored five unanswered points, but Jessica Perry's layup with one minute left in the half gave Utah the 30-26 lead at the break.
Utah led the entire second half as it saw its lead swell to as much as 10 points, 40-30, with just under 15 minutes left. However, Marist finished the game out-scoring Utah, 9-3, and tied it up at 59-59 with 58 second left. Both Warburton and Whipple had a chance at a three-pointer in the last 41 seconds, but both missed and the game went into overtime.
The Utes return to action tomorrow to battle Mid-American Conference foe Akron in their second game of the Oahu Classic. Tipoff here at McKinley High School is set for noon local time (3 p.m. MT).
"I really want the kids to respond this loss," Elliott finished. "We need to take the court with more energy, more instinct and with the desire to close the game. We can't wait for a game to finish for us, and that's what we've been doing. We need to get past that."
