Denver, Colo. - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team lost to Arkansas and Denver on Saturday afternoon, while the men fell to Denver. In the meet Utah got several strong performances from its freshman on both the men's and women's side.
The Utah women lost to Denver by a score of 163-137, while the Arkansas women beat the Utes 176-121. The losses drop Utah's record to 1-2, but Utah remains 1-0 in MWC competition. The Ute men fell to Denver by a score of 168.5-111.5. The Utes are 0-1 on the men's season thus far.
The Ute women were led by freshman Natalie Edge who won the 50 free with a time of 24.19. Edge went on to win the 100 free as well, finishing in 52.29. Freshman Maiya Otsuka placed second in the 400 IM to Denver's Olivia Dean. Otsuka swam a time of 4:37.33. The 400 free relay team of Kristina Evans, Jana Willsey, Chelsea Reopelle and Emily Judd finished second with their time of 3:33.61. Shannon McQueen finished third in the 100 back (59.07), and Kelly McIntyre placed third in the 200 fly (2:08.15).
Utah's men competed against Denver and saw freshman Rick Mason win the 1650 free by just under 18 seconds. Mason won with a time of 16:32.93. Another Ute freshman, Garrett Beaman won the 50 free (21.46) and 100 free (46.13), and placed second in the 100 back (51.00). Beaman was also on the 400 free relay team with Tanner Folster, George Evans and Marco Ferraro which tied for first (3:06.05). Trevor Salt added a second-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:53.14, while John Baque placed second in the 200 breast (2:07.27). Ferraro placed second in the 500 free, finishing in 4:44.27.
Next up for Utah's men is a trip to Arizona State on Nov. 9. Both the men and women will be home on Nov. 10, as they will face UNLV.
