LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah women's soccer team remained unbeaten in its last 10 outings Thursday night. The Utes opened Mountain West Conference play with a 2-2 draw on the road at UNLV.
Utah (8-2-3, 0-0-1 MWC) played well in the first half. The Utes took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break on goals from juniors Adele Letro (Davis, Calif.) and Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City).
Letro got the scoring started in the 23rd minute, scoring her 14th goal of the season. Reineke got a pass to Letro, who was alone in the box and beat the keeper toward the right post. Thirty seconds later, UNLV (5-3-5, 0-0-1 MWC) answered when Katie Carney found the back of the net for the Rebels to make it 1-1.
Reineke continued the goal-scoring flurry less than five minutes later. The East High School product scored off a free kick from just outside the box after a foul call. Reineke put the ball in the top, right corner of the goal for her ninth tally of the season.
"I thought we did a lot of really good things in the first half," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "We had chances to score more in the first half, but didn't get it in the net. Consequently, the game was tight."
Only one goal was scored in the second half. UNLV's Kristen Shim got a shot off that was saved by Ute goalkeeper Lynzee Lee. But Lee was unable to corral the ball and Carney scored her second goal of the game for the Rebels to tie things up 2-2 in the 62nd minute.
Neither team was able score for the remainder of regulation or two 10-minute overtime periods, leaving the result a tie.
"W were really out-played in the second half," Manning said. "The other team worked harder and was more committed in the second half. At the end of the day, it wasn't enough to win the game. We're disappointed in that. Hopefully we've learned our lesson. We just hope to move on and do better against BYU."
Utah will be in action again when the Utes face off with BYU Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Provo.
