SALT LAKE CITY - Utah vaulted back into the Top 25 earlier this week and played like a nationally ranked team on Friday night, taking down 20th-ranked Pepperdine 2-0 at Ute Field.
The Utes (7-4) won their third game in a row, getting second half goals from Amanda Feigt and Melissa Crespo to prevail over the Waves (6-3-2). Utah dominated the game, outshooting Pepperdine 18-3.
After a scoreless first half, Feigt capitalized on a beautiful pass from Adele Letro in the 62nd minute.
Utah organized quickly in transition to catch Pepperdine's defense flat-footed. Letro then slipped a textbook pass through a seam in the defense ahead to Feigt, who spurted up field for a one-on-one with Pepperdine keeper Kayla Stolte. Feigt made few quick touches and drilled an eight-yard shot into the middle of the net. It was Feigt's second goal of the season.
The Utes continued to hold the ball in their attacking third for nearly the next five minutes. Letro came close to scoring a goal of her own with 17:47 remaining in the half. She made a nice turn with the ball but fired her shot just right of the frame.
Utah got an insurance goal off a corner kick in the 79th minute. Whitney Dorsey arced a nice ball in from the right corner to Melissa Crespo, who shook loose just off the far past and got a solid header away. The ball went sailing past Stolte for Crespo's first career goal.
The Utes outshot the Waves 11-0 in the second half and had a 6-2 advantage in corners for the game.
Stolte was tested early and often by the Utes, making seven saves in addition to allowing both goals. She made two quick saves in the first 10 minutes. Hailey Marsh took a shot from in tight and Kelly Isleib blasted a wide-open 20-yarder, both denied by Stolte.
Utah keeper Ashley Mason was forced to make only one save to get the Utes' third shout of the season and their second in a row.
The Utes takes the rest of the weekend off before opening Mountain West Conference play next Thursday. The Utes host UNLV at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
