This Week:
The 2006 season gets started with the Utes traveling to the Reno Chase Race in Reno, Nev., on Sept. 2nd at 9:30 a.m.
Kyle Kepler's Quotes:
"During the preseason workouts we focused on getting our new group acclimated and familiar to the training sessions," states second year coach Kyle Kepler.
"We have no set numbers for the Reno Chase Race," Kepler says "After the races we will be able to make appropriate corrections and changes to determine our strengths and weaknesses. We are taking it one race at a time, trying to get back in race mode; it's a chance to get our feet wet.
Outlook:
The Utes will run this season with no seniors on the team; however will have many returning starters who have placed in the MWC Championships.
Among those starters is Chelsea DiGrazia a sophomore who ran in six of the seven cross country meets in 2006 and led the Utes in all six races. She finished 27th at the MWC Championships by clocking a personal best of 22:24 in a 6k race.
Coming off an injury from last season sophomore Lauren Endersen who only ran in two races last year, clocking a 17:59 (30th) at the season opening Heritage Open and finishing 36th (19:34) at the Mountain State Invitational
Sophomore Janette Ern who raced in the final six races of the season in 2005 and turned a personal best of 24:07 at the Regional meet, she also clocked a 24:12 at the Chili Pepper Invite and a 24:33 at the MWC.
Looking to lead the pack this year is sophomore Kellie Anderson who ran in all seven races last year and placed 47th with a personal best of 23:31 at the MWC Championships, she also clocked a 24:01 at the Chili Pepper Invite and a 24:46 at the Mountain Invite.
Newcomers Alyssa Abbott, Rebecca Mackelprang, Cherise McNair, and Stephanie Skoreyko should be able to step in and contribute to the team immediately.
Next Week:
The BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah. The Race will be held at the East Bay Golf Course, the site of the 2005 NCAA Mountain Region Cross Country Championships. This is a handicap style race where athletes of equal ability start at the same time. The teams competing in this race also include Boise State, Nevada, and Sacramento State.
