SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team continued its long-standing dominance of the Air Force Academy Wednesday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Led by 27 points from senior Kim Smith and 19 from senior Julie Larsen, the Utes dismantled the Falcons, 90-45.
Utah (12-4, 3-2) has never lost a women's basketball game to Air Force (10-6, 1-4), racking up its 21st consecutive victory in the series. The win was also No. 475 for Utah head coach Elaine Elliott. She is just the 27th active coach and just the 36th in the history of Division I women's basketball to reach 475. Elliott is now 475-190 in her 23rd season -- all at Utah.
Air Force took advantage of a lackluster start from Utah and held a one-point lead on three different occasions in the first half. The Falcons' last lead was 13-12 midway through the first half. Utah then turned it into more of a typical matchup with Air Force. The Utes outscored the Falcons 39-6 over the final 10:55 of the first half and went to the locker room with a 32-point advantage, 51-19.
The Utes had offensive spurts of 13-2 and 19-0 during that span. Utah converted its field-goal attempts at a rate of 60.7 percent in the first half. Smith and Larsen had 17 and 13 points, respectively, by intermission.
An 11-2 Ute run early in the second half pushed the lead over the 40-point mark. Freshman Morgan Warburton hit a three-pointer with 16 minutes left in the game to cap the spurt and put Utah up by 41 points, 66-25. Warburton scored 14 points in the contest.
Junior Camie Oakey converted a traditional three-point play with 1:30 remaining in the contest, pushing Utah to its biggest lead of the night, 90-45. Neither team scored from there.
Along with the double-figure outputs of Smith, Larsen and Warburton, Ute senior Shona Thorburn scored 10 points and dished out eight assists. For the game, Utah shot 62.5 percent. The Utes hit 10-of-18 from three-point range for a 55.6 percent clip. Utah also made 20-of-27 free throws, compared to 4-of-4 for Air Force.
The Falcons were led by Jacki Novak, who came off the bench to tally 12 points.
Utah will be back in action again Saturday, traveling to Las Vegas for a Mountain West Conference matchup with UNLV. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. MST.
