Huge Second Half Run Lifts Utah Over SDSU, 76-39

SAN DIEGO -- The University of Utah women's basketball team opened the second half of Wednesday night's game against San Diego State with a 32-2 run. Behind the strength of that run and 22 points from Kim Smith, the Utes took a 76-39 win over the Aztecs at Cox Arena.
Utah led 31-19 at the intermission, but exploded at the beginning of the second period. Ute senior Julie Larsen scored on a layup, followed by six straight points from Smith. Larsen then hit a three-pointer. Less than three minutes into the half, Utah's lead had ballooned to 23 points.
But the Utes weren't finished there. They held San Diego State scoreless for the first 6:28 of the second half. Utah scored 20 points in the second half before the Aztecs even lit the scoreboard. Utah made 12 of its first 14 shots in the second half.
The Utes led 56-21 after a three-pointer by freshman Morgan Warburton with 12:18 remaining in the game. Then Utah freshman Joh-Teena Filipe took over. The Salt Lake City native scored the Utes' next 11 points, her total for the night. By the time Filipe was finished, Utah held its biggest lead at 45 points, 67-22.
Utah reserves played most of the last 10 minutes of the game, as the Utes cruised to the 37-point win.
Utah fell behind 4-0 in the first minutes of the contest. But Heidi Carlsen hit a three-pointer to put the Utes on top 8-6 just 2:29 into the contest and Utah never trailed again. The Utes used a 14-2 run to push their lead into double digits, 25-10, midway through the first half. The run was sparked by six straight points from Smith and was capped by three-pointers from sophomore Jessica Perry and freshman Morgan Warburton.
Smith's 22 points led all scorers. She also had a game-high nine rebounds, dished out three assists and grabbed two steals. Smith's stats were accumulated in just 25 minutes of playing time. Three other Utes scored in double figures. Larsen scored 13 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from behind the three-point line. Perry and Filipe each tallied 11 points. Senior Shona Thorburn dished out six assists and also grabbed seven rebounds for the Utes.
San Diego State was led by LaSandra Dixon, who tallied 10 points and was the only Aztec in double figures. Utah enjoyed a 40-17 advantage on the boards in the contest. The Utes shot .551 percent from the field in the game, including a .652 clip in the second half.
Utah will be back in action again Saturday at the Huntsman Center. The Utes host Colorado State in a 3 p.m. contest.
