SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Utah men's swimming and diving team finished with 1,366 points, claiming second place at the Notre Dame Invitational. The women's team finished third with 1,467 points. Both the men's and women's team of Notre Dame finished first.
Senior Jonathan Larsen won his second event of the meet, setting a new Utah school record in the 100 free of 44.07 seconds, which also provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA meet. Junior Andrew Cole picked up the second win of the night for the men when he won the 200 back with a time of 1 minute, 49.84 seconds.
The men's 400 free relay team of David Maasberg, Cole, Larsen and David Johnson took top honors in the event with a time of 3 minutes, 01.98 seconds, edging out Notre Dame's team by 03.40 seconds.
For the women, Amber Walter posted her third event victory of the meet by winning the 100 free with a time of 50.48 seconds, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Walter provisionally qualified in all three of the individual events she won and in the 200 free relay event. Jennifer Fredsall finished second in the 100 free with a time of 51.75 seconds and third in the 200 fly with a time of 2 minutes, 05.69 seconds.
Junior Rachael Curci finished second in the 1650 free in 16 minutes, 58.32 seconds, while Shannon McQueen finished fourth in the 200 back with a time of 2 minutes, 04.40 seconds. The women's 400 free relay team of Alison McInturff, Walter, Fredsall and Amy Barefield finished second in 3 minutes, 25.91 seconds.
"We had a fabulous meet," said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. "We set some great records and we're off to a good start to finish the year strong as we start up our conference schedule."
Overall, Utah set four new school records in the men's 100 free (Larsen; 44.07), the women's 1-meter diving (Kelsey Patterson; 305.30) and the men's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events (Sterling Richards; 376.90, 400.95). Fredsall also set a Notre Dame Invitational and Rolfs Aquatic Center pool record in the 100 fly (55.11).
Also, the Utes provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in six events; the women's 200 free relay (Walter, Barefield, Fredsall, McInturff; 1:33.49), the women's 50 free (Walter; 23.18), the women's 100 breast (Walter; 1:03.15), the women's 100 free (Walter; 50.48), the women's 100 fly (Fredsall; 55.11) and the men's 100 free (Larsen; 44.07).
Utah takes a break before returning to action Jan. 13, 2006 against New Mexico at Ute Natatorium.
