Utes Wrap Up Non-Conference Play Against T-Birds
The University of Utah women's basket-ball team comes back from Christmas break to wrap up its non-conference slate Friday. The No. 21/22-ranked Utes will host in-state rival Southern Utah.
Utah's meeting with the Thunderbirds will mark the fi rst time the two teams have faced off since 1995. The Utes hold a 9-1 advantage in the all-time series.Utah is coming off a 2-1 road swing. The Utes split a pair of games against nationally-ranked opponents at the Duel in the Desert, held at UNLV. Utah defeated North Carolina State and fell to Notre Dame in Vegas. The Utes then traveled to Eastern Michigan University and picked up a 72-67 win over the Eagles.
In the victory over Eastern Michigan, Kim Smith scored a season-high 29 points for the Utes to lead them to victory. Jessica Perry added 13 points, while Julie Larsen tacked on 10 for Utah.
Utah was 11-4 in non-conference action last season. The Utes will be looking to wrap up non-conference play with a 9-2 mark this year. Utah has won its last eight home games.
Dialing Long Distance
Utah averages more three-pointers per game than any other team in the Mountain West Conference. Through their first nine games, the Utes are hitting 7.2 shots per game from behind the arc. The Utes also rank No. 19 in the nation in three-pointers per contest. Utah's three-point percentage is in the middle of the MWC pack. The Utes rank No. 6 in the conference, hitting at a .327 clip.
Last year, Utah was one of the more prolific three-point shooting teams in the nation. The 2004-05 squad made nearly seven (6.9) treys per game, ranking No. 15 in the nation in three-pointers made per game. That number was also good enough to rank second in the MWC, just behind Wyoming's mark of 7.14.
Smith Still Streaking
Senior forward Kim Smith currently has a streak of 49 games of scoring in double figures. She currently ranks in the top 10 in six of the Mountain West Conference's 12 statistical categories. In addition to rank-ing second in scoring (20.0), she is in the top 10 in rebounding as well, averaging 7.3 per game.
Smith has only failed to reach double-figure scoring four times in her Utah career. She has scored at least 10 points in 102 of 106 games with the Utes. She currently ranks No. 3 all-time in scorng at Utah, with 1,826 points. At her current pace, she should finish as the school's all-time leading scorer.
