No. 22 Utah Travels North to Face Eastern Michigan
The University of Utah women's basketball team will look to rebound from a disappointing, 68-55 loss to Notre Dame when they travel to Ypsilanti, Mich. Wednesday. The Utes will go on the road to face Eastern Michigan University.
Utah has never faced the Eagles. The Utes are making the trip in an effort to get their Canadian contingent a game closer to home. Eastern Michigan University is less than a day's drive from the hometowns of four of the Canadians on the Utah squad.
The Utes are coming off a pair of games against nationally-ranked teams at the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas. Utah defeated North Carolina State 73-62 in the first round of the tournament, before losing the Gray Division title game to Notre Dame.
Eastern Michigan is 4-4 on the season. The Eagles haven't played since defeating Saint Louis University 67-59 back on Dec. 13.
Tipoff from Ypsilanti is slated for 7 p.m. (EST) from the EMU Convocation Center. The game will be broadcast on the internet at www.UtahUtes.com.
Utah Fast Breaks
? Utah's 55-point offensive output against Notre Dame was its lowest of the season. The Utes had been averaging 68.3 points per game during their 6-game winning streak.
? Kim Smith is scoring 19.0 points per game through Utah's first nine contests. She is the only Ute to reach double figures in all nine games.
? Wednesday's matchup will mark just the fourth time Utah has faced a member of the Mid-American Conference.
? This will be the first meeting against a MAC team other than Northern Illinois. The Utes are 1-2 against the Huskies and have never faced another MAC school.
? Wednesday's game is Utah's final non-conference road game of the season.
Dialing Long Distance
Utah averages more three-pointers per game than any other team in the Mountain West Conference. Through their first nine games, the Utes are hitting 7.11 shots per game from behind the arc. The Utes also rank No. 27 in the nation in three-pointers per contest. Utah's three-point percentage is in the middle of the MWC pack. The Utes rank No. 6 in the conference, hitting at a .327 clip.
Last year, Utah was one of the more prolific three-point shooting teams in the nation. The 2004-05 squad made nearly seven (6.9) treys per game, ranking No. 15 in the nation in three-pointers made per game. That number was also good enough to rank second in the MWC, just behind Wyoming's mark of 7.14.
