SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 22/25 University of Utah women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought, 62-53 victory over the previously unbeaten Oregon State Beavers Thursday night at the Huntsman Center. Senior forward Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) scored a season-high 22 points to lead all scorers.
Utah (3-1) led 32-22 at halftime, but struggled to put the ball in the basket early in the second half. But Smith, who scored just six points in the first 20 minutes, took over in the second. She scored 16 of her 22 points in the second stanza to keep Oregon State at bay.
A Casey Nash three-pointer with 4:18 remaining in the game pulled Oregon State (3-1) within five points, 49-44. But Smith answered with a 15-footer on the next Ute possession to halt any potential run from the Beavers. Over the final seven minutes, Smith scored 11 of Utah's 18 points. She hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to ice the victory.
While Smith did much of the Utes' scoring in the second half, it was senior guard Julie Larsen (Logan, Utah) who did most of the damage early. Larsen got her first start of the season and responded with 14 points, including nine in the first half. All nine of her first half points came from behind the three-point arc.
While Utah never trailed in the first half, two of Larsen's three-pointers came late in the first half to give the Utes a bit of a cushion. Leading by four, Larsen hit her second trey of the game to push Utah to a 25-18 edge with 4:33 remaining in the half. Her third three-pointer gave Utah its first double-digit lead, 30-20, with just more than one minute remaining in the half.
Utah enjoyed a 40-26 rebounding advantage. The Utes were paced on the boards by Shauna Brouillard (Sudbury, Ontario). The junior forward pulled down a career-high 11 caroms. Sophomore forward Jessica Perry (Guelph, Ontario) added eight rebounds for Utah. Smith, Larsen and senior guard Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ontario) all scored in double figures for the Utes. Thorburn recorded 10 points and also dished out four assists.
Kim Butler led Oregon State with 16 points. Mandy Close tossed in 13, while Anita Rivera and Casey Nash added 11 and 10, respectively, for the Beavers.
Smith and Thorburn each started their 100th consecutive games for Utah. Smith reached double figures for the 96th time.
The Utes continue their four-game homestand Saturday afternoon, hosting Loyola Marymount in a 3 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center. -UU-
