This Week
Utah, which has seven wins and a tie in its last nine games, hosts first and second round games of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday and Saturday at Ute Field. Utah is one of 34 teams receiving an at-large bid to the 64-team tournament and will welcome three other teams to the University of Utah campus. BYU (15-2-3), the No. 4 seed in the quadrant, will face Weber State (14-4-1) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. (MST), followed by Utah (14-6-1) versus Arizona (9-7-3) at 7:00 p.m. (MST). The winners will meet in the second round on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (MST).

Tickets for the first and second round games at Ute Field are on sale at the Utah Athletics Ticket Office, located at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Phone orders will be accepted at (801) 581-UTIX. In The Rankings
? Utah dropped out of the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll after being ranked No. 22 last week. The Utes are tied with Stanford for 10th in the West Region rankings.
? The Utes are listed 13th in Soccer Buzz West Region rankings.
? Utah is receiving votes in the Soccer Times Top 25 poll.
Scouting Arizona
The Wildcats are 9-7-3 overall and have lost their last three games. Arizona is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance in as many years. Last weekend, UA lost at No. 4 UCLA, 2-1, on Friday and at USC, 1-0, on Sunday. The Wildcats tied for fifth place in the Pac-10 Conference with a 4-4-1 mark.
Mallory Miller (M, 5-5, Sr.) leads the Pac-10 in points (39) and goals (17) this season. She also has five assists. London King (F, 5-5, Fr.) has three goals and three assists. McCall Smith (GK, 5-9, So.), a native of Salt Lake City, has 106 saves and a 1.11 goals-against average in 18 games. Head coach Dan Tobias is 30-24-5 in his third season at UA and has a 74-69-14 career record in eight years.
The all-time series with Utah and Arizona is tied 2-2. The Utes have a 1-0 advantage in games played in Salt Lake City. The two teams met earlier this season with the Wildcats winning 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 16 in Tucson, Ariz.
Utes In The Postseason
Utah's all-time postseason record is 11-8-3, including a 1-2-1 mark in the NCAA Championships. The Utes have made three previous appearances in the NCAA Tournament, all coming under Rich Manning. In 2002, Utah defeated BYU (3-2) in the first round and lost to Portland (3-0) in the second round in Provo, Utah. In 2003, Utah and Idaho State played to a scoreless tie with the Bengals advancing in a shootout at Ute Field. In 2004, Utah fell to Colorado (3-0) in Portland, Ore.
The Utes are 10-6-2 in conference tournaments, including a 9-5-2 mark in Mountain West Conference Tournament play. The Utes have never lost in the quarterfinals and won the tournament title in 2003 and `04.
Mountain West Title Belongs To Utah
Utah claimed the 2005 Mountain West Conference regular season title with a 6-0-1 record. Despite losing in the semifinals of the MWC Tournament last week in Las Vegas, the Utes have won four of the last six conference regular season and tournament titles combined. Utah claimed the Mountain West regular season championship with a 6-0 record 2003. The Utes won the MWC Tournament title in 2003 and `04.
Since Rich Manning took over as Utah's head coach in 2002, the Utes have the best winning percentage in Mountain West Conference games. Utah has a .820 winning percentage (19-3-3), followed by BYU at .760 (17-4-4), UNLV at .560 (14-11-0) and San Diego State at .500 (10-10-5).
Utah won its first six conference games this season before tying BYU 1-1 in Provo, Utah, on Oct. 28. The Utes finished 6-0-1 in league games, while the Cougars (4-1-2) and UNLV (5-2-0) tied for second place.
Last Week
Utah advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Championship, losing to New Mexico 1-0. The tournament was played at UNLV's Johann Memorial Field
Top-seeded Utah took care of business in its quarterfinal game on Wednesday afternoon, getting a 3-0 win over eighth-seeded Air Force. The Utes received goals from Katy Reineke, Amanda Sanchez and Kim Lloyd. Adele Letro picked up two assists on Utah's first two scores. The Utes out shot the Falcons 24-3 and set up all four corner kicks in the game. Twelve of Utah's 24 shots were on goal. Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason made two saves, while her counterpart Erin Wallace was forced to make 10 stops.
Fifth-seeded New Mexico struck with quick goal and played excellent defense the rest of the way, eliminating Utah in the semifinals on Thursday night. A throw-in by Katelyn Lee just one minute and 23 seconds in set-up the only goal of the game. When nobody made a play on Lee's ball after it was initially headed, Terryn Granados punched the shot into the back of the net. New Mexico had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks while both teams got away nine shots. The Utes didn't get many clean looks at the frame, however. After scoring, the Lobos kept seven to eight players on their end of the field the rest of the game.
Injury Report
? Freshman forward Jen Christoffers has been out since Sept. 25 with a torn ACL.
? Junior defender Tasia Duarte has been out since Sept. 25 with a fractured bone in her knee. She is doubtful to play this week.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 56-18-9 in his fourth year at Utah. He has led the Utes to the NCAA Tournament all four years of his tenure, two Mountain West Conference regular season championships (2003, `05) and a pair of league tournament titles (2003, `04).
Manning has directed the Utes to the second-most wins in school history with a 14-6-1 record. Utah also won the MWC regular season title with a 6-0-1 record. He was named the 2005 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
In 2004, Manning guided Utah to its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, its second consecutive MWC Tournament title and a 13-6-3 overall record. Manning was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz in 2003. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On making the NCAA's - "It's one of our core dreams here to go to the NCAA Tournament each year. We never take for granted how hard it is to get here and how fortunate we are to be able to participate. However, we are also very competitive people. Part of our dream is to go deep into this event. We have been to the tournament enough to know the terrain. We have experienced an early exit each of the last two seasons and want desperately to improve this year. I expect an energetic and proud Utah team to take the field on Thursday."
On playing Arizona - "Arizona is a very good team. They are well-coached and relentless in their approach. They move the ball well and have some dangerous attackers. Mallory Miller has scored 17 goals this year... what a great senior season for her. They went to the NCAA's last year and had a disappointing result. I'm sure they'll be hungry to do better this year."
On hosting the NCAA's - "This is a great weekend for soccer in Utah. Three of our teams are playing in the NCAA's. And we get to play in front of our friends and fans. It should be an electric environment. I encourage everyone to come out and experience this."
MWC Statistical Rankings
? In the team statistics as of Nov. 7, Utah ranks second in shots (14.29 per game), second in points (4.62 per game), second in goals per game (1.57), second in assists per game (1.48), third in goals-against average (0.69), fifth in saves (4.19 per game), third in shutouts (10), eighth in fouls (9.81 per game), and fourth in corner kicks (3.33 per game).
? In the individual rankings as of Nov. 7, Adele Letro is first in shots per game (3.10), tied for fourth in points per game (0.95), tied for fifth in goals per game (0.33), sixth in assists per game (0.29) and tied for third in game-winning goals (3) ... Amanda Feigt is tied for fifth in goals per game (0.33) and tied for third in game-winning goals (3) ... Katie Reineke is tied for third in game-winning goals (3) ... Ashley Mason is sixth in saves per game (4.10), third in shutouts (7) and third in goals-against average (0.71).
Stingy Ute Defense
The Utes have shutout 10 teams this season. Ashley Mason has seven complete-game shutouts and shared three others with Emalee Rogers. Utah allowed just four goals in seven regular season conference games, getting four shutouts.
Other than giving up four goals to Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 25, goalkeeper Ashley Mason had allowed just 11 goals in the other 20 games. Mason has made 86 saves with a 0.71 goals-against average in 21 games this season.
Ute Notes
? Utah's 14 wins this season are the second-best mark in the 11-year history of the program. The Utes set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories (16-2-2) in 2004. The Utes got 13 wins in 2004 (13-6-3), 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0).
? Utah went undefeated in conference play for the second time ever this season, finishing 6-0-1 in the Mountain West. The Utes finished undefeated and untied in league play in 2003, going 6-0.
? Utah has a 300-196 advantage in shots and an 140-103 edge in shots on goal over its opposition this season. The Utes also have a 1.52-0.69 advantage in goals scored per game.
? Adele Letro and Amanda Feigt lead the Utes with seven goals this season, followed by Kim Lloyd, Katy Reineke and Melissa Wayman with three. Letro has a team-best six assists. Whitney Dorsey, Lloyd and Reineke each have four.
? Utah has faced four 2004 NCAA Tournament teams this season, going 1-3 in those games. Utah defeated UNLV (1-0) in Las Vegas, Nev., on Oct. 22. The Utes lost at Arizona (1-0 OT) on Sept. 16, to California at home (1-0 2OT) on Sept. 25 and at Pepperdine (1-0) on Sept. 30.
? Utah won its first six games of the season for the best start in school history.
? The Utes lost three in a row and five of six games to end their nonconference season. Utah was held scoreless in all of five of the losses. Three of those defeats came to teams ranked in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25.
? Utah is 0-2-1 in overtime games this season.
? Utah scored a season-high four goals against Idaho on Sept. 4. The Utes have also scored three goals in six other games.
? Utah closed out its regular season home schedule with an 8-1 record. The U. had its first night game ever at Ute Field against Purdue on Sept. 9, drawing a season-best crowd of 1,141.
? Soccer Buzz magazine rated the Utes' 2005 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation. This is the third consecutive year Utah's recruiting class has been rated in the top 50 in the nation. Soccer Buzz magazine has also named signees Lynzee Lee (GK, Kalispell, Mont.) and Katy Reineke (M, Salt Lake City) to its list of Top 100 high school recruits in the nation. Lee and Reineke, along with Jen Christoffers (F, Phoenix, Ariz.), have experience on the West Region Olympic Development Program team.
Coming Up
The winner of Saturday's second round game at Ute Field advances to the third round of the NCAA Championship. The opponent will come from the No. 1 seed Portland, Nebraska, Creighton and Iowa State bracket being played this weekend in Lincoln, Neb. The third-round game will be take place either Nov. 18, 19 or 20 at a site to be determined.
