SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah sophomore center Deanne Hanchett (Draper, Utah), who started 31 games last season, will be out indefinitely with knee problems. Hanchett has had chronic issues with both of her knees, which have caused increasing pain over the past two seasons.
Ute head coach Elaine Elliott said Hanchett's presence on the floor will be missed, but that she would remain with the team and retain her scholarship.
"It has just come to the point where trying to compete in the continual pain Deanne is in is more than anyone could ask of her," Elliott said. "Until and unless something changes in the area of pain management, she will be out indefinitely."
Hanchett had played in two of the Utes' three games this season, starting one. She averaged 11.5 minutes per game. Hanchett had scored five points and pulled down one rebound in her two games this season.
As a freshman last season, Hanchett played in 33 of the team's 34 games. She ranked third on the team in rebounding (4.1 per game) and fourth in scoring (6.7 per game).
