Utah Set to Host Oregon State
The No. 22/25-ranked University of Utah women's basketball team returns home to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center Thursday night. The Utes will host Oregon State in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
Thursday's contest marks the final matchup in a three-game stretch of contests against Pacific-10 Conference opponents. The Utes went 1-1 on the road against Pac-10 opponents last week, falling 63-56 at Washington and then winning 66-63 at Arizona.
Kim Smith scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Utah's win over Arizona, recording her first double-double of the season. Julie Larsen's 12 points on four three-pointers off the bench were key in the victory as well.
The contest against Oregon State is the first of Utah's longest homestand of the season. The Utes will play four games at home in 10 days, beginning Thursday night.
Utah last faced Oregon State during the 2003-04 season, dropping a 71-62 decision to the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore. The last Salt Lake City meeting between the Utes and Oregon State came in 2001, with Utah taking a 58-46 victory.
Utes Get Defensive
Utah has traditionally been one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Utes led the nation in scoring defense in three of the past six seasons (1999-2000, 2000-01, 2002-03). They have ranked in the top 10 in five of the last six years. Last season, Utah ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and 27th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 55.7 points per game.
The Utes are on their way to another strong defensive season. In its first three contests, Utah has allowed an average of just 57.3 points per game. Opponents are shooting just .354 from the field and a paltry .255 from three-point range against the Utes.
Arc de Triomphe
The Utes were one of the more prolific three-point shooting teams in the nation last year. The squad made nearly seven (6.9) treys per game, ranking No. 15 in the nation in three-pointers made per game. That number was also good enough to rank second in the MWC, just behind Wyoming's mark of 7.14.
The Utes have made at least five three-pointers in each of their first three games this season. However, Utah is 2-0 when making more than five treys. The Utes hit 11 three-pointers against Jacksonville State and eight against Arizona in victories. They managed to score just five from behind the arc in the loss to Washington.
Utah's average of 8.0 three-pointers made per game is tops in the MWC. The Utes' three-point percentage of .358 ranks fourth in the league.
Mission Kim-Possible
Senior Kim Smith is the only Ute to score in double figures in each game so far this season. She is averaging 20.3 points per game, which is tied for No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference. She is also leading the team and is ranked No. 5 in the MWC in rebounding, pulling down 8.7 caroms per contest.
Smith averaged 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season, leading the MWC in both categories. She is the three-time reigning Mountain West Conference Player of the Year. She has led Utah in scoring and rebounding in each of her three previous seasons.
Bringing the Wood ... errr Larsen
Senior Julie Larsen, known by her maiden name of Wood for the past three seasons, has made a career of giving Utah a lift with her three-point marksmanship. Larsen came up big for the Utes again Saturday in the victory over Arizona.
Larsen came off the bench with 14 minutes left in the second half and Utah trailing the Wildcats 41-36. Over the next seven minutes, Larsen hit four three-pointers to key a 22-6 outburst and give Utah a nine-point lead, 56-47.
Larsen then secured the victory, blocking a last-second Wildcat three-point attempt, which could have tied the game. It was Larsen's first blocked shot in 94 career games and three-plus years.
