SEATTLE -- The University of Utah women's basketball team shot just 33.3 percent from the field Wednesday night in a 63-56 loss on the road at the hands of the University of Washington. The Utes, ranked No. 21/23 in the latest polls, drop to 1-1 with the loss. The Huskies improved to 3-0.
Kim Smith scored underneath the basket 36 seconds into the game to give Utah a 2-0 lead. Washinton's Cameo Hicks put Washington on top 3-2 with a trey from the left wing two minutes later and the Huskies never trailed again. Hicks tied with Smith for game-high scoring honors with 21 points and pulled down a game-high 21 rebounds for Washington.
The Huskies built their advantage to as many as nine points midway through the first half, when Kristen O'Neill hit a three-pointer. Utah answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Julie Larsen and Smith to cut its deficit to three. The Utes were still down by just three at the intermission, 27-24, despite shooting just better than 30 percent from the field in the half.
Camie Oakey hit one of a pair of free throws at the 13:26 mark in the second half, pulling Utah within two, 33-31. But that's as close as Utah would get in the second half. Washington countered with a 10-0 run to take a 43-31 advantage with nine minutes remaining in the contest. The Huskies' advantage ballooned to 13 with 7:21 remaining when O'Neill hit a three-pointer to make it 48-35.
Smith tried to put the Utes on her back in the waning minutes. She answered O'Neill's three with a trey of her own and followed it up with a drive across the lane for two. Those baskets pulled Utah back within eight, 48-40. The Utes cut their deficit to six, 56-50, when Heidi Carlsen hit a three-pointer at the 1:40 mark. After three UW free throws, Carlsen hit another bomb to pull the Utes within six again, 59-53, with 53 seconds remaining.
But it was too little too late. Washington converted nine-of-12 from the free-throw line over the final two minutes to hold off the Ute comeback attempt.
Hicks and Smith were the only players in double figures for either squad, with each scoring 21. Washington out-rebounded Utah 54-38 and had 25 offensive boards to the Utes' 17. The Huskies held a 13-9 advantage in second-chance points in what was otherwise a relatively even game. Washington converted just 34.3 percent from the field, compared to Utah's 33.3 mark.
Utah will be back in action again Saturday, traveling to Arizona to face another Pac-10 opponent in its home arena. Tipoff from Tucson is slated for 7:30 p.m.
