THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team travels to San Diego for the Mountain West Conference Championships April 29-May 1.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Utah wrapped up regular season play last weekend with away matches at Wyoming and Colorado State. The Utes fell 5-2 to the Cowgirls on Saturday and 5-2 to the Rams on Sunday. Utah finished the season with a 7-16 mark and 1-6 in the conference.
CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES: The No. 28 UNM squad finished with a 7-0 record in league play to earn its first MWC regular-season title and the No. 1 seed. No. 21 BYU earned the No. 2 seed with a 6-1 record in conference play, while the third-seed went to 55th-ranked UNLV which finished 5-2 in MWC play.
The fourth and fifth seeds went to No. 69 San Diego State and Colorado State, respectively. The Aztecs finished league play with a 4-3 record, while the Rams finished 3-4 in the conference.
Air Force, Utah and Wyoming finished with identical 1-6 records in conference play, and based on the MWC tie-breaking procedure, the Cowgirls claimed the sixth seed, while the Utes earned the seventh seed and the Falcons the No. 8 seed.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny: "We had a very disappointing weekend on the road. In perhaps two of the most important matches of the season the Utah women's team came up short. We are just not giving the consistent effort and putting in the off-court preparation that we need right now. Although with five starting freshman this season we are a young and inexperienced, we are not getting great leadership from our starting seniors and that has been hurting our team.
Going into the MWC tournament our preparation and desire are going to be essential. I don't doubt our ability and potential, but recognize that some of our unexpected losses this season may be due to lack of consistency in competition and inexperience in competing in the dual match format, and not necessarily a lack of desire or talent. I hope to see this team come together and compete the way I have seen them do at times throughout this season. I'd like to end this season on a better note than we did last weekend."
