THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team is on the road in Texas this week with match ups against Rice University and the University of Houston. On Friday, March 12, the Utes take on Rice at the Jake Hess Tennis Center at 3:00 p.m. and Houston on Saturday, March 13 at 10:00 a.m. on the John E. Hoff Varsity Courts.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: Utah lost its first conference match to No. 20 BYU at home Feb. 28. The Utes started out by losing the doubles point. Despite the effort in singles, the team did not pick up any wins and the Cougars walked away with a 7-0 victory.
UTE NOTES: Junior Allison Hansen and freshman Ashley Young are still unable to compete due to injury. Shannon Bullard, a junior from Ogden, and Jenacee Jackson, a freshman from Salt Lake have joined the lineup to help the Utes out.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Rice University enters its match with Utah with a 6-6 mark on the season. The Owls have defeated teams such as Louisianna Tech 7-0, Sam Houston 7-0, Texas A&M 6-0, Minnesota 5-2, San Antonio 6-1 and Purdue 5-2. Rice has fallen to William and Mary, Florida State, LSU, Texas A&M College Station, Alabama, and Tulsa so far this season.
Houston has a 4-5 mark on the season. The Cougars have wins over McNeese 5-2, Lamar 7-0, Texas State 5-1 and UAB 6-1. The losses of the season have come to UTA 5-2, Alabama 7-0, SMU 4-3, Wisconsin 6-1 and No. 32 New Mexico 7-0.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny: "We are really excited to begin our outdoor season in Texas playing #58 Rice and Houston. This trip will be a great opportunity to get used to playing at a lower altitude and to get us ready for the next couple of months of outdoor tennis. The month of March will bring a number of opportunities for us to play ranked, but beatable teams, and we're looking forward to the trip and the upcoming weeks."
"It doesn't look like we'll have Hansen or Young back, but we're hoping to have one or both of them with us as we go into our conference season."
