SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Utah women's basketball team extended its winning streak to six with a 27-point win over San Diego State at Cox Arena this evening. The Utes improve to 16-4 overall and remain the only unbeaten team in Mountain West Conference play at 6-0.
Utah shot 40 percent from the field on the game and held San Diego State to just 19 percent. The Utes also out-rebounded the Aztecs 42 to 27.
"I think we can do a lot better," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "Our shooting was atrocious early and obviously got better later in the game."
"They didn't get to the glass against us and that was important since they weren't having much luck offensively, either," she continued.
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith posted her fourth double-double of the year, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds. She also added two blocks and two steals. Sophomore Julie Wood added 11 points as the only other Ute to reach double figures scoring with 11 points.
Sophomore Shona Thorburn pulled down nine rebounds to go along with seven points, four assists and two steals. Senior Carley Marshall added seven boards, six points and four assists.
The game started slow, with the score notched at four apiece until the 8:50 mark. During that time, Utah was held scoreless for more than eight minutes. The Utes closed out the half on a 12-4 run and went into the locker room up 21-12.
Utah shot 32 percent from the floor on the half, compared to the 21 percent of the Aztecs. The Utes connected on just 3-of-13 (23 percent) from downtown, while San Diego State was 0-for-3. Utah out-rebounded the Aztecs 22 to 15, but committed six turnovers on the half, compared to the four of San Diego State. Wood and Little had six points apiece to lead the Utes, followed by Smith with five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Neither team scored for the first 3:49 of the second half, when Smith hit a pair of free throws. Utah later used a 12-0 run to go up by 19 and never looked back. The Utes shot 48 percent from the field on the half and held the Aztecs to just 17 percent. Utah also won the rebounding battle 20 to 12.
