THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's tennis team is back in action this week with a match against long time rival, No.20 Brigham Young University. The Utes take on the Cougars at home in the Eccles Tennis Center Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The Utes put on an impressive show at home last weekend, finishing with two wins over Utah State and Nevada. On Friday, Feb. 20, Utah topped the Aggies 5-2 and walked away with a 6-1 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack on Sunday, Feb. 22.
UTE NOTES: Junior Allison Hansen and freshman Ashley Young are still unable to compete due to injury. Shannon Bullard, a junior from Ogden, and Jenacee Jackson, a freshman from Salt Lake have joined the lineup to help the Utes out.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: The Cougars are ranked No. 20 in the nation with an 8-3 mark on the season. The team recently competed in the USTA/ITA National Women's Indoor Championships. BYU fell 7-0 to No. 3 Cal Berkley in the first round. The Cougars came back, defeating No. 52 USC 6-1 and No. 14 College of William and Mary 4-3 in the first and second rounds of the consolation bracket.
BYU has collected wins over a number of other ranked teams including Boise State, Kansas, and Denver. The other losses of the season have come to No. 7 Washington 5-2, and Notre Dame 6-1.
One of the strengths of the Cougars is in the doubles. Dynamic duo Rebecca Pike and Nicole Schneider remain undefeated this season.
QUOTING HEAD COACH Megan Dorny: "BYU is ranked 20th.They have been playing some very prestigious programs, a lot of big schools and highly ranked teams and doing fairly well. I really feel like even though we are going to be the underdogs in that match, we are going to match up very well in the singles play."
" BYU does have three very well established doubles teams. I think getting the doubles point is going to be tough. I really feel like the singles match ups are going to be match ups and we have chances to win at every spot. It's really going to come down to the girls and their self-belief and if they bring their A game on Saturday. We'll spend the week preparing for that and hopefully it will be a good match."
