This Week
Utah, the 2004 Mountain West Conference Tournament champion, heads to Portland, Ore., for NCAA Tournament first and second round games. The Utes (13-5-3) face Colorado (14-5-2) in the first round on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PST) at the University of Portland's Merlo Field. The other first round game at that site features Portland (17-3-0), the No. 5 seed overall in the NCAA field, versus Weber State (8-9-2) at 7:00 p.m. (PST). The winners will meet on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
Tickets In Portland
Tickets for Friday and Sunday's matches went on sale Tuesday morning. Prices are $10 for stadium reserved seating; $8 for benchback reserved seating; general admission prices are $7 for adults and $5 for students. Advance tickets are subject to service charges of $1 per ticket for reserved seats and $0.50 per ticket on general admission seats. Utah Update
Utah is 13-5-3 overall and won its second consecutive Mountain West Conference Tournament last week in Provo, Utah. In the championship game, Utah got past No. 3-seeded San Diego State in a shootout, 4-3. The game was tied 1-1 after two overtime periods, forcing the game to penalty kicks. Utah, making its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, is one of 29 teams receiving an automatic bid to the 64-team tournament. Utah finished fourth in the Mountain West Conference this season with a 3-2-1 record. The Utes are 3-1-1 on neutral fields this season and 4-2-0 on opponents' fields.
Sophomore forward Amanda Feigt is one of four Utes in double figures in points this season. She has six goals and five assists for a team-leading 17 points. Sophomore midfielder Hailey Marsh is second with six scores and one assist (13 points), followed by junior forward Kim Lloyd (2-8-12) and freshman forward Chelsea Card (5-0-10). Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Mason has allowed just 16 goals while making 69 stops for a 0.88 goals against average. She has played in 18 of 21 games this season, posting six shutouts.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 42-11-8 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. He was also named the U.'s 2003-04 Don Reddish Coach of the Year. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Scouting Colorado
The Buffaloes (14-5-2) are in the NCAA Championship for the second consecutive year. They finished third in the Big 12 Conference with a 6-3-1 record. At last week's Big 12 Tournament in San Antonio, the Buffs defeated Missouri (2-1 OT) in the opening round and fell to 10th-ranked and No. 2 seed Texas A&M (3-1) in the semifinals.
Colorado is led by first-team all-Big 12 junior midfielder Fran Munnelly (9 goals, 5 assists), junior midfielder Ashlie Mihalcin (9 goals, 3 assists) and senior second-team all-Big 12 midfielder Jen Thais (7 goals, 4 assists) on offense. Second-team all-Big 12 goalkeeper Jessica Keller has a 0.70 goals against average and 89 saves. Keller has a school record 11 shutouts this season. Head coach Bill Hempen is 42-28-7 in his third season at CU.
The Utes and Buffaloes met earlier this year on Sept. 12 in the Wake Forest/adidas Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C. Colorado won 1-0 as Katie Griffin scored the gamewinner in the 72nd minute. Colorado has a 2-1-0 lead overall and a 1-0-0 advantage on neutral fields in the all-time series between the two schools.
The Buffs made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2003, falling to BYU (2-0) in the first round in Salt Lake City.
Rich's Remarks
On playing Colorado in the NCAA's: "I'm happy that we get a chance to play. They're (Colorado) a good team. We wouldn't expect anything else in the tournament. It's a very even match-up. They are very skillful. Last year was their first year (in the NCAA Tournament) and I think they were just excited to be here. I think this year they will be out to win a game and they will be motivated. We will have to dig in and play a good game."
On the Utes since playing Colorado earlier: "We have so many new players this year that I feel like we have had to develop some mental toughness and character over the year. I feel like we've done that in the last few weeks. We have some players out who played in that game (against Colorado earlier)--Melissa Wayman, Kim Lloyd and Tasia Duarte--and those are impactful players. But the other ones have had good experience and I felt like after we lost to Vegas and tied San Diego State here the first conference weekend, there was some soul searching. We've been mentally tougher since then."

Ute Notes
? Utah's 13 wins this season equals the second-best mark in the 10-year history of the program. The Utes also got 13 wins in 2002 (13-4-3), 2000 (13-7-1) and 1999 (13-7-0). Utah set the school single-season wins record with 16 victories in 2004.
? The Utes have lost just once in their last nine games. Following a 1-0 loss to UNLV on Oct. 7 in the Mountain West opener, Utah has recorded six wins and two ties. The only loss during that stretch was to BYU (2-1) on Oct. 30 in the final game of the regular season, snapping a season-best tying four game winning streak.
? The Utes are 13-3-2 in Mountain West Conference regular-season games in three years under Rich Manning. Utah went 6-0-0 in MWC play to claim its first outright league title in school history in 2003, following a 4-1-1 record and a second-place finish in 2002.
