Last Week
Utah dropped its final game of the regular season to BYU 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City.
Carolyn Swenson opened the scoring for BYU in the 21st minute. Both teams took six shots and had three corner kicks in the first half. Trailing 1-0, Hailey Marsh got the Utes on the board 30:32 into the second half. Utah got the ball in deep on a cross by Amanda Feigt. Marsh was able to keep the ball away from three nearby BYU defenders, getting a shot away off her knee from five yards out on the right side.
The Cougars took the momentum away from the Utes a little over a minute later. Krissa Reinbold hit Brooke Bowman, who beat Utah goalkeeper Ashley Mason from 10 yards away, putting the ball into the lower right corner 76:58 in. Despite getting a few other nice looks and outshooting BYU 11-8 in the second half, the Utes were unable to score the rest of the way. Utah finished with a 17-14 advantage in shots and a 6-5 edge in corners for the game. Both Mason and Erika Woodbury made four saves in goal.
Head Coach Rich Manning
Rich Manning is 40-11-7 in his third season at Utah. Last season, Manning was named the 2003 West Region Coach of the Year by the NSCAA/adidas and Soccer Buzz. He was also named the U.'s 2003-04 Don Reddish Coach of the Year. The Utes went 16-2-2, won the MWC regular-season (6-0-0) and tournament titles, and went to the NCAA Tournament. In 2002, Manning led Utah to a 13-4-3 mark, including a 4-1-1 record in Mountain West play, and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Utah program, Manning was an assistant and associate head coach at Santa Clara (1998-2001).
Rich's Remarks
On the BYU game: "I thought we did some good things in the game against BYU last weekend. We showed great resolve in chasing the game for 60 minutes and scoring the tying goal. And, we were unlucky to get a second equalizer. We have grown tremendously as a group over the last month, both in victory and defeat. We have become mentally tougher and, I believe, more confident in our potential."
On the MWC Championships: "The MWC tournament will be an exciting event this year with unpredictable results and tight games. We have had some periods of excellent soccer as well. If we can play with more consistency, I think we will be a force to be reckoned with this week. We have had terrific success in Provo the last couple of seasons and I hope it will continue."
