SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah women's basketball team opened the 2004-05 exhibition season with a 9-0 run. The Utes continued rolling from there, picking up a 70-41 victory over Baden Sports Tuesday night at the Huntsman Center.
The nine-point spurt over the first three minutes was keyed by a four-point play from forward Camie Allen. The sophomore took a dish from junior guard Shona Thorburn and buried a three-pointer, while being fouled by former Ute Kelsy Stireman. Allen then knocked down the free throw to complete the rare four-point play.
Former Utah player Carley Marshall finally got Baden Sports on the board with a three-pointer at the 16-minute mark. Utah led 19-11 when freshman Marie Warner scored on a putback of her own miss. Warner's basket sparked a 10-0 spurt, which included two Julie Wood three-pointers. Wood's second trey gave Utah a 29-11 advantage with eight minutes left in the half.
A Marshall bucket with less than one minute remaining in the first half trimmed the Utah lead to 12. But Warner hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer to send the Utes into the locker room with a 15-point advantage, 36-21.
Stireman scored the first four points of the second half for Baden Sports to pull her team within 11. But that's as close as Baden Sports would get. A Warner three-pointer ignited a 14-0 Utah run to put the game out of reach. Freshman Deanne Hanchett, who scored a game-high 16 points, tallied five during the Ute outburst.
Hanchett also tied for game-high rebounding honors with Utah junior Kim Smith, who tallied eight points and six steals. Warner was the only other Ute in double figures with 10 points. Thorburn dished out seven assists, grabbed four steals and pulled down five rebounds. Marshall was the only double-figure scorer for Baden Sports, registering 15 points.
All nine Utah underclassmen, including six freshmen saw action for the Utes.
"We didn't learn anything new about the team that we didn't know already," said Thorburn. "We're young, it's early and we're not worrying and not concerned."
Utah head coach Elaine Elliott expected some of the growing pains shown by her young squad, but saw some positives.
"We're two weeks into trying to teach these young kids and it showed," Elliott said. "We have to keep learning and progressing through the season. Deanne Hanchett played aggressively tonight, that's what you want to see from a freshman. You want them to be confident."
The Utah women will play their second and final exhibition contest of the season Nov. 13, hosting a team of National Women's Basketball League players. Tipoff for that contest is slated for 3 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.
