LARAMIE, Wyo. - Hailey Marsh got the first of two first-half goals to lead Utah to a 2-0 win over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West Conference soccer. Utah improves to 11-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play, heading into its final game of the regular season against BYU next Saturday.
On a breezy 40-degree day, the Utes took advantage of having the wind at their back in the first half by scoring two goals. Wyoming (9-5-4, 2-3 MWC) outshot the Utes 11-5 in the second half, but was unable to score thanks to six saves by goaltender Ashley Mason.
Sophomore forward Hailey Marsh came off the bench to get the first goal of the game off a corner kick from Whitney Dorsey in the 28th minute. It was the fourth goal of the season for Marsh.
The Utes got their second goal in the 32nd minute when a Cowgirl defender attempted to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard, but instead sent the ball past her into the net.
Wyoming outshot the Utes 18-11 for the game, while corner kicks were even at five apiece.
"The conditions we played in were tough all weekend, and the team showed great character and maturity in dealing with that," said Ute head coach Rich Manning. "We played very well this weekend, and the intangibles of this team are staring to come together."
"Hailey Marsh came off the bench and got us our first goal to get us going," continued Manning. "We also were fortunate in getting an own goal, but the breaks have a way of balancing out over the season. Our defense was solid and Ashley (Mason) was terrific today. She made three or four excellent saves."
The Utes return home for their final game of the regular season against BYU next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
