ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Lauren Field scored two first-half goals and Ashley Mason made five saves to lift Utah to a 2-1 win over New Mexico on Thursday night. By getting its second win with just one loss and a tie in Mountain West Conference play, the Utes stayed in contention for the league championship.
On a windy night at the UNM Soccer Complex, both teams played aggressive when the wind was at their back and did their best to possess the ball when it was in their face. Utah (10-4-2, 2-1-1 MWC) had the wind in the first half, getting both of its goals in the first 31 minutes. New Mexico (5-9-0, 1-3-0 MWC) scored its only goal early in the second half when it had the wind at its back.
Field opened the scoring in the 11th minute, hitting a shot from eight yards out on the right side after taking a pass from Kim Lloyd.
Field got her second goal with 14:43 remaining in the first half, chipping it over goalkeeper Kristen Winters in the box. After Amanda Feigt took a pass from Kiley Jones, Fiegt slotted the ball to Field, who was waiting by the near post. It was the third goal of the season for the High Point, N.C., native.
The Lobos got on the board in the sixth minute out of halftime. Midfielder Anna Neu scored off a deflection on a 20-yard shot, bringing New Mexico back within one goal. Even though the Utes didn't score in the second half, they kept the pressure on Winters by firing seven shots and forcing her to make five saves.
The Utes picked up their first win in four games all-time against the Lobos in Albuquerque. The Lobos outshot the Utes 12-11. Utah finished with a 5-2 advantage in cornerkicks.
Utah wraps up its two-game road trip against Wyoming in Laramie on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Utes then return home to host BYU on Oct. 30 at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
