Cross Country Teams To Compete in Stanford Invitational

This Week:
The University of Utah men and women's cross country teams will continue their 2003 seasons as they compete in the Stanford Invitational on Sat., Sept. 27 in Palo Alto, Calif.
Twenty-four men's teams will compete in an 8,000-meter course while 30 women's teams, including powerhouses Stanford, Wisconsin and Arkansas will compete in the 6,000-meter race. This will mark the first 6,000 meter race the Ute women have ran in over a year. Also at the meet, will be Mountain West Conference foes UNLV and San Diego State.
Quoting Head Coach Brian Appell:
On the Women's team
"This weekend will give us an idea of how we will stack up against conference members and other strong teams from around the country," says Appell. "Based on her training I expect Elise Greenwood to have an outstanding performance. A top eight finish for the women would be a great performance."
On the Men's team
"Twenty-four men's teams will compete in the 8,000 meter course. This will be a great experience for our young men's team," notes Appell. "We should be in the top half of the field this weekend."
Last Meet:
The University of Utah cross country teams finished the Brigham Young Fall Classic on Sat., Sept. 13. The meet featured athletes from Utah, BYU, Weber State, Utah State, Utah Valley State College, Minnesota and Northwest Nazarene. The women's team finished fourth with 96 points, while the men finished fifth with 156 points.
On the women's side, sophomore Elise Greenwood led the team with an impressive fourth-place finish in the 5K run. Jenny Brusch finished 18th followed by Nellie Hammons at 22nd, Jennie Haertel at 31st and Season Meservey at 32nd to round off the top five.
"I went out and ran the strategy that coach gave me," said Elise Greenwood. "I felt good the whole way through. The course was great, the way it was sectioned off gave you a chance to get a feel for it."
Jeff Davidson led the men's team with an 19th place-finish in the four-mile run, followed by Nick McKay at 33rd, Tim Goldhardt at 49th, JP Rooney at 51st and Cameron Christeson at 75th.
"I did what I was supposed to do, but I didn't do what I wanted to do. I'm still moving up," stated Jeff Davidson.
Future Meets:
Next up for the Utes is the San Diego State Invitational in San Diego, Calif., on Sat., Oct. 4.
