SALT LAKE CITY - Utah pounded four goals past goalkeeper Suzie Grech in the first 48 minutes to cruise to a 4-1 win over 17th-ranked Michigan on Sunday afternoon at Ute Field.
Sophomore Carisse Winegar was involved in three of the scores with a goal and two assists. The win improved Utah to 3-0 against teams ranked in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 at Ute Field under second-year head coach Rich Manning. Last season, the Utes defeated fourth-ranked Portland, 2-0, on Sept. 1 and 18th-ranked Kentucky, 3-0, on Sept. 8.
Utah (2-0-0) converted four of its five shots on goal with two of the goals being set up by corner kicks. Ute freshman keeper Ashley Mason, who played the entire game, allowed only one goal and made four saves.
Junior forward Lauren Field opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, placing a header in the upper right corner of the goal after taking a pass from Amanda Feigt.
Utah kept the pressure on Michigan (0-1-1) and converted a Winegar corner kick at the 32:50 mark. Melissa Wayman scored the goal on a header. Another corner kick from Winegar that was touched by Tracy Stratton led to a goal from Amber Brower, who took the shot from five yards away. The Utes outshot the Wolverines 8-4 in the first half.
In the third minute out of halftime, Winegar added a goal of her own, firing from the front of the goal on the right side and placing the ball past Grech in the upper corner. Michgan ended Mason's shutout bid in the 76th minute with a close range shot placed in the lower right corner by Kate Morgan.
In a physical game, Utah was whistled for 15 fouls to Michigan's four. The Wolverines had seven corner kicks to Utah's six.
Utah faces another ranked team in No. 6 Texas A&M on Friday night in College Station, Texas. The Utes also play at Baylor next Sunday night as a part of the two-game road trip.
