CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 19/20 Utah women's basketball team fell to 6-3 on the season with a 71-62 loss at Oregon State (5-3) this evening. The Utes shot 39 percent from the field on the game, compared to the 63 percent of the Beavers. Utah was also out-rebounded 32-26. The Utes won the turnover battle, committing eight and forcing 14 by Oregon State.
"Oregon State played a very good game, so you have to give credit to them first," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "They thoroughly beat us for 25 minutes before we started to compete. We're not competing early; we're playing very tentatively."
"It's discouraging, because we've been here before," she continued. "Our players just don't understand how much other teams want us and want what we have."
Sophomore Shona Thorburn led Utah with a game-high 24 points. She also added four assists and two steals.
Sophomore All-America candidate Kim Smith added 19 points, three assists and two steals. Senior Mandie Little pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds, while Smith added six and senior Carley Marshall finished with four.
After taking an early lead in the first half, Utah fell behind at the 14:53 mark and trailed for the rest of the game. After both Marshall (3) and Little (2) got into foul trouble, the Beavers used a 9-0 run to go up by 13, 31-18. The Utes cut the lead to as little as seven, 34-27, and went into the locker room down by nine, 39-30.
Oregon State shot a blistering 70 percent from the field on the half, compared to the 44 percent of Utah. The Beavers also out-rebounded the Utes 18-8 and made 4-of-5 three-pointers. Thorburn led Utah with 11 points, while Smith had 10.
Oregon State scored the first seven points of the second half as part of an 11-1 run that put them up by 19 points, 50-31. However, the Utes then outscored the Beavers 17-4 to cut it to six, 54-48. Utah later used a 5-0 run to get as close as four (63-59), but that was as close as the Utes would get. Utah shot 33 percent from the field on the game, while Oregon State connected on 57 percent of its shots.
