Cross Country Teams To Compete In Arizona State Invitational

This Week:
The University of Utah women's cross country team will head to Tempe, Ariz., for the Arizona State Invitational. Competition will kick off on Sat., Oct. 10, with the women running a 6K race beginning at 4:45 p.m. and the men running an 8K race at 5:15 p.m. The race, at Kiwanis Park in Tempe, will feature the No. 4 ranked women's and the No. 13 ranked men's team of Arizona State.
Quoting Head Coach Brian Appell:
"We did a decent job last week at the Pre-Conference Meet in San Diego, but we have to continue in our development to have a run at our rival conference members," notes Head Coach Brian Appell. "We will be racing against Arizona State and the University of Arizona, who are both solid PAC-10 and national caliber teams."
Last Meet:
The University of Utah cross country teams finished the Pre-Mountain West Conference Meet on Sat., Oct. 4. The meet, held at Morely Field in Balboa Park, Calif., featured top-ranked Brigham Young on the women's side. Both Ute teams notched first place finishes in their respected races. Other teams included New Mexico, Wyoming, UNLV, and San Diego State.
The race gave the Utes an opportunity to check out the course they will run at the MWC Championship meet on Nov. 1.
The women's team finished behind favored BYU for second place (55 points) in the 6K race. Elise Greenwood had an outstanding day leading the Utes with a second-place finish. Jenny Brusch was next at seventh place followed by Nellie Hammons at ninth, Season Meservey at 16th and Andrea Davidson at 21st.
The men's team finished in third place (59 points) in the 8K race with Jeff Davidson leading the way. He notched an impressive third-place finish followed by Nick McKay at seventh. JP Rooney finished 14th, Tim Goldhardt finished 17th and Matt Hansen finished 18th to round out the Utes.
"I'm very pleased with our women's team," stated Head Coach Brian Appell. "They started race running as a pack and then moved up as the race continued. The men's team still has a lot of work to do. They're young, with most of the experienced runners redshirting, and will have to do better at the conference championships."
Future Meets:
Next the Utes will host the Utah Inaugural on Sat., Oct. 18, at Rose Park Golf Course.
