SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah women's basketball team remained unbeaten in the Mountain West Conference with a 15-point win, 59-44, at San Diego State this evening. With the win, the Utes improve to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Utah shot just under 44 percent from the field on the game, including 13-of-17 from the charity stripe. The Utes, who maintained control throughout the contest, also held San Diego State to just 38 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Aztecs 32 to 26.
"It was so nice to get these two wins on the road," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said of her team's wins over San Diego State and UNLV. "It really takes a lot of pressure off us."
The Utes, who scored 24 points in the paint, got big games from junior post players Carley Marshall and Mandie Little. "Carley and Mandie did a good job of getting the ball inside tonight," Elliott noted. "Carley's game, in all facets, is the best it's ever been."
Marshall led all scorers with 19 points, while freshman Kim Smith added 13 points and Little finished with nine. Smith also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, as did sophomore Shona Thorburn. Thorburn also added nine points, four assists, one block and one steal.
Utah opened the game on an 11-2 run, scoring the first six points and holding the Aztecs scoreless for the first 3:48. The Utes extended the lead to as many as 11, with San Diego State narrowing it to as little as six late in the half and Utah going into the locker room with an eight-point lead, 28-20. The Utes connected on 11-of-27 shots on the half, and forced nine San Diego State turnovers.
Both teams came out flat in the second half, but San Diego State chipped away at the Utah lead, narrowing it to five (32-27) with 10:04 left on the clock, the smallest lead since 12:10 remained in the first half. Both teams then traded baskets several times down the court, but sophomore Lana Sitterud hit two three-pointers to allow the Utes to extend the lead back to eight. Utah pushed it back to 10 on a Marshall jumper with 3:25 left in the game and never looked back.
UP NEXT:
Utah travels to Provo next Saturday, Feb. 1, for a 3:30 p.m. game at Brigham Young, the only other MWC team who has yet to drop a conference game. "Erin Thorn and Jennifer Leitner are the two best seniors in the Mountain West," Elliott said. "They are both experienced and confident."
