SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team solidified its first-place national ranking in scoring defense with a 66-22 rout of San Diego State at the Huntsman Center tonight. The Aztecs' 22 points is the lowest point total ever by a Utah opponent in the 28-year history of the program. With the win, the Utes improve to 19-4 overall and 9-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
Utah, which shot 44 percent from the field on the game, outscored the Aztecs 57-8 over the last 31:50 of the game. The Utes also out-rebounded San Diego State 38-32 and forced 28 Aztec turnovers. Up 14-9 just under eight minutes in, San Diego State would make just two of its last 30 shots.
"After a slow start, we turned things up a notch and made things more difficult for them," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "We need to do that for 40 minutes if we want to call ourselves a good team."
"Our bench played a lot and played well," she added.
Junior Carley Marshall led Utah with a double-double -- 11 points and 14 rebounds. She also blocked four shots, nabbed two steals and dished out two assists.
Freshman Kim Smith also finished with 11 points, while freshman Julie Wood added nine points, and junior Mandie Little and sophomore Shona Thorburn each had eight. Thorburn also finished with a team-high six assists and grabbed six rebounds.
Junior Hanna Green and freshman Meghan Woster each had seven points, a career-high for Woster.
In the first half, Utah started slow, connecting on just four of its first 13 shots (31 percent) while the Aztecs shot 55 percent from the field. The Utes then held San Diego State scoreless for the last 12:10 of the half while scoring 25 points of their own.
"San Diego State started the game with more intensity and energy than we did," Elliott said. "Our kids didn't get into the game until about the 12 minute mark. We need to address the fact that we didn't start out with enough intensity."
Utah dominated the second half, scoring four times as many points (32-8) as San Diego State. Utah caused several San Diego State scoring droughts, including a 6:29 time span, and finished off the game by holding the Aztecs scoreless for the last 4:10 of the game.
