OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- The men's and women's swimming teams both finished in fourth place after the second day of competition. The men finished in fourth place for the second straight day with 120 points. The women jumped two spots from yesterday to claim fourth place going into the third day of competition with 175 points. The competition will resume tomorrow Mar. 1, at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
In the men's 500 free, sophomore Magnus Lofgren finished eighth (4:37.21), Matthew Marceau finished 10th (4:36.72) and Evan Castro took 13th (4:38.72). In the 200 IM, freshman Cody Rempfer finished fifth (1:52.05) while teammates David Fleisch (1:55.45) and Daniel Godfrey (1:56.32) took the 13th and 15th spots respectively. Freshman David Johnson finished 15th in the 50 free (21.73).
For the women, Loren Sweny finished third in the 500 free (4:55.99) edging out teammate Sara Afong (4:57.25) who finished fourth. Kristen Kaiser finished sixth (4:59.52). Sweny and Afong left their mark in the Utah record book by setting the second and third best times in school history respectively. In the 200 IM, Courtney McKinney took fifth place (2:05.94) setting a Utah school record and Renee Dyer finished 15th (2:10.64). Neringa Statkeviciute finished third in the 50 free (23.64).
In the 200 free relay events, the Ute men's team of Jacob Burton, Brandon Durrant, Brett Hoerstring and Johnson finished fourth with a time of 1:24.26. The women's team of Dyer, Rebecca Gerber, McKinney and Statkeviciute finished fifth (1:36.20).
"This is a tremendous improvement from last year," says head coach Mike Litzinger. "Last year we only had six finalist at the night meet and this year we had thirteen finalists on the second day of competition."
