MORAGA, Calif.- The University of Utah women's tennis team defeated Saint Mary's 5-1 on Feb. 15, 2002. The Utes improve to 5-2 overall and pick up their second straight win on the road. The Utes excelled in singles play and dominated doubles play by winning all three matches.
In singles play, Linn Ronnberg defeated Annie Wolford in a grueling match, 6-3, 3-6. 6-4. In the second spot, Senior Irini Kotoglou was defeated by Valerie Verrier in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Sheri Esrock beat out Megan Schulman, 6-2,6-1. Freshman Ellen Svensson downed Nicole Hunstock, 6-3, 6-1. While Cassie Kasteler defeated Lindsay Herndon-Ortega, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to help seal the win for Utah.
In doubles action the Utes swept all three matches. The Ronnberg and Esrock tandem defeated Hunstock and Verrier, 8-2. Svensson and Kasteler ousted Wolford and Herndon-Ortega, 8-3. The Hansen and Kotoglou team defeated Schulman and Castalina Fillol, 8-2, to complete the Utah sweep.
Utah will return home to face Washington on March 1, 2002. The match will be held at 11:00 a.m. (MST).
