Utes Make All-West Region Soccer Team

SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Utes' Shauna Gurr-Bingham and Maren Harper were selected to the third-team all-West Region Soccer Team after amazing attributes throughout the season. The selections were announced today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
"Making the all-West team is a tremendous achievement, especially in a year in which there were so many talented players in the region," said Head Coach Rich Manning. "To put it into perspective, 16 teams of the 64 in the NCAA Tournament were from the West. Both Maren and Shauna had great seasons and are deserving of the honor. It is also a tribute to the success that the team enjoyed this year."
Both seniors were major contributors to the Utes' best ever overall season record (13-4-3). Gurr-Bingham led Utah in both points (21) and assists (5). She also tied the career assists record, which stands at 21. Gurr-Bingham is also placed third in the Ute record books for both career points (71) and goals (30).
"Shauna spearheaded our attack," remarked Manning. "Her skills and aggressive play created many opportunities for us. Shauna also scored some important goals on our way to the playoffs."
As captain, Harper guided the Utes' nationally ranked defense this season. In the NCAA rankings, Utah finished the season ranked 30th overall in goals-against average (0.85). Except for the loss to the powerhouse Portland Pilots in the NCAA Tournament, Utah only gave up more than one goal in five games. Harper's presence this season shined not only on the field, but also in the classroom. Earlier this season, Harper was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America first team after boasting a 4.0 GPA.
"Maren was the heart of our defense," said Manning. "She was relentless in her tackling and covered a tremendous amount of ground in the back. She also kept us organized in defense. In addition, she was our team captain and, along with the other seniors, helped guide our team into the NCAA playoffs."
