SALT LAKE CITY - The Utes' (11-2-3, 4-1-1 MWC) late rally wasn't enough as Utah was ousted by arch-rival BYU, 2-1. This heartbreaking loss is only the Utes' second of the season. With the loss, Utah will be seeded second in the Mountain West Conference tournament.
This heated rivalry picked up from the beginning as both teams came out highly aggressive. As the game progressed, two yellow-cards were given out. The first was on Ute senior defender Maren Harper and the second was issued to BYU's Brooke Thulin. Utah was penalized with 15 fouls, while the Cougars picked up 18. Both teams performed well, but it was the Cougars balanced offensive attack that prevailed.
BYU's sophomore forward Kimmie Davis spearheaded the Cougar's offense early in the first half. Forward Jamie Rendich's cross connected with a thrashing Davis to put BYU up 1-0. BYU would add to their lead in the second half as Jeni Viernes fired one pass senior goalkeeper Courtney Hills-McBeth.
Utah would answer back late in the second half off a goal scored by forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham. The senior forward's goal was assisted by senior defender Megan Maxwell.
The Utes didn't stop there, as a late second half surge almost rallied them into overtime. With six minutes left in the game, Gurr-Bingham fired another shot that was deflected off the crossbar and was just inches away from the goal-line. Minutes later, forward Missy Dennis blazed a 20-yard shot that was saved by BYU keeper Mandy Gott. Dennis would have another opportunity to score with just a few seconds remaining on the clock. The junior forward broke away from the Cougar's pressuring defense and made her way down field. Her desperation shot was blocked by a BYU defender as the game-clock expired.
After finishing the regular season with an impressive 11-2-3 overall record and a 4-1-1 MWC mark, the Utes will place second in the MWC this season. The conference tournament will begin Wednesday, Nov. 6 and will last until Saturday, Nov. 9. Pairing and times will be announced late Sunday.
