THIS WEEK:
Utah (12-3-3) will travel to Provo, Utah, to compete against arch-rival BYU (16-5-0) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The match is scheduled to be played Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m. on South Field.
If the Utes advance past the first round, they will take on the winner of the Idaho State (13-6-1) vs. Portland (14-4-2) match on Saturday at noon in Provo.
UTE NOTES:
- Utah will be making its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season. Utah was one of 35 teams that received at large bids. Although the Utes will be making their first NCAA appearance, Head Coach Rich Manning is no stranger to the spotlight. Manning helped direct Santa Clara to four NCAA Tournament appearances, from 1998-2001, three NCAA College Cups (national semifinals) and the 2001 NCAA Championship.
- Utah has posted eight shutouts this season and held seven other opponents to just one goal. The Utes haven't given up more than two goals to any opponent this season.
- The Utes, finished second in the Mountain West Conference during the regular season with a 4-1-1 conference mark.
NCAA STATISTICAL RANKINGS:
As a team, the Utes are ranked No. 15 in goals-against average with an average of 0.68. Utah is also tied for the No. 25-ranking in won-lost-tied percentage with an overall percentage of 0.75.
UTE ACADEMIC HONORS:
Utah's success this season has ventured further than the field, as two Utes have been recognized for their academic excellence. Seniors Maren Harper and Courtney Hills-McBeth have been named the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VIII Women's University Soccer Team.
Currently, Harper is sporting a 4.00 GPA, while pursuing a degree in political science. Hills-McBeth is working on her master's degree in education leadership. The goalkeeper finished her undergraduate degree with a 3.84 GPA in political science.
MWC STATISTICS:
Utah's defense ranks first in goals allowed (0.72) and goals-against average (0.68). The Utes' offense ranks second in goals per game with an average of 2.00.
GURR-BINGHAM BREAKING RECORDS:
Senior forward Shauna Gurr-Bingham is currently one assist away from breaking the all-time Ute career assists record. She is tied for first with former Ute Staci Burt with 21 career-assists.
SCOUTING BYU:
The Cougars romped over San Diego State 9-2 in the semifinal and New Mexico 5-1 in the championship game to win the Mountain West Conference tournament. BYU finished the regular season with a 16-5-0 overall record and a 6-0-0 mark in the league. BYU has won 13 straight matches after starting the season 3-5-0.In their regular-season meeting BYU defeated Utah 2-1 on Nov. 2 in Salt Lake City.
The Cougars will be making their sixth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament and hold a 5-5 all-time record in postseason play.
LAST WEEK:
Utah fell 1-0 to New Mexico in the MWC Semifinals. Utah's defense, which had been rock solid all season, cracked an inopportune time, allowing the Lobos to prevail. Utah outshot New Mexico 16-5 and had eight shots on goal.
