Utah Women's Basketball Shuts-Down Air Force Falcons

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the Air Force Falcons, 67-39 on Thurs., Jan. 17 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Utah improves to 9-6 overall, 2-1 in MWC play. The Falcons drop to 4-11 overall, 0-2 in the MWC.
After a sluggish start, the Utes got things going offensively and went on an 11-2 run with :49 seconds to go in the first half. Air Force hit a three-pointer with two seconds to go before the break and Utah went into the lockerroom leading 34-16. The Utes shot 50 percent (11-22) from the field, 45 percent (5-11) from three-point range and 88 percent (7-8) from the free-throw line in the first half. Utah held the Falcons to just 6-of-26 from the field, 2-of-12 from behind the arc and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line in the first half.
Utah came out in the second half, and blew the game wide open. The Utes were able to convert 12-of-14 free-throws and made 9-of-22 from the field in the second half alone. Utah took its biggest lead of the night on back-to-back three-pointers by senior Lindsay Herbert. Herbert went 4-of-9 from the field, 4-of-8 from three-point range and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
On the night, Utah had four players score in double figures. Senior Erin Gibbons led the way with 16 points, four assists, two blocks and a steal. Lauren Beckman racked-up another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, while Katherine McColl added 12 points. All 12 players saw time in the game. Dual sport athlete, Katrena Ellett played in her first game of her college career tonight. She had two points, one board and a steal in two minutes of play. As a team, the Utes went 20-of-44 from the field, 8-of-20 from three-point range and 19-of-22 from the free-throw line. Utah out-rebounded the Falcons, 40-27.
Latoya Howell led all scorers with 17 points, four rebounds and a game-high six steals on the night. Howell shot 7-of-15 from the field, 1-of-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Air Force shot 26 percent (14-54) from the field, 14 percent (3-21) from the behind the arc and 67 percent (8-12) from the free-throw line.
"Its nice to get the win and we bounced back from a tough loss last week," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "We had the inside presence and got some points in the paint. We moved the ball and shot the ball well tonight. Our offense from the bench needs to get better, but we defended well and controlled the tempo of the game. We just have to keep plugging away and stay consistent, but I am happy with the win."
UP NEXT: The Utes will play New Mexico on the road on Sat., Jan. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Utah hosts in-state rival Brigham Young on Sat., Jan. 26 at 3:00 p.m. On Thurs., Jan. 31, the Utes will face the UNLV Rebels at 7:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. Utah will take on the San Diego State Aztecs on Sat., Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City. On Feb. 7, the Utes will travel to Fort Collins, Colo., facing the Colorado State Rams at 6:30 p.m. On Sat., Feb. 9, Utah will take on the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7:00 p.m. in Laramie, Wyo.
