SALT LAKE CITY - After defeating Boston University on Thursday, the Utah soccer team returned to action against the University of Arizona on Sunday. Three first-period goals would be enough for the Utes to hold off the Wildcats, as they rolled on to a 4-1 victory.
Less than ten minutes into the match, Ute forward Katie Tate scored the first goal of the game off of a Amber Brower assist. Tate's fourth goal of the season gave Utah the early advantage. Seconds after the 36-minute mark, freshman Julie Herdic gave Utah another boost by scoring off of a penalty kick. With the final minutes of the first half ticking down, Missy Dennis scored Utah's third goal by deflecting her kick off of an Arizona defender. The goal marked Dennis' fifth of the season.
The Wildcats battled back at the beginning of the second period by maintaining control of the ball. Vanesha Bailey kicked in Arizona's sole goal at the 55:02 mark. The Ute defense picked up their intensity and the offense followed. Amy Kofoed retaliated the Wildcat's second-period goal by scoring her third goal of the season with 18 minutes left to play. Katie Tate and Megan Maxwell were credited with the assist. With the 37th goal of her career, Kofoed is just one goal shy of the school record held by Carolina Courage team member Staci Burt.
Utah's 4-1 advantage held up as the Utes cruised to their fifth victory of the season. Goalkeeper Lynnsey Asay improved her record to 3-0. The win improved Utah to 5-2-0 on the season, while the Wildcats fell to 3-3-1. The Utes will next host Weber State on Oct. 5 at 5:00 p.m.
