EUGENE, Oregon - The University of Utah women's basketball team fell to 4-3 on the season with a 63-55 loss to the Oregon Ducks at McArthur Court on Saturday.
Tough defensive pressure by the Ducks forced Utah to the perimeter early in the game. Utah senior guard Erin Gibbons started to heat up under the pressure, hitting the outside shots to give the Utes a 24-10 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. The Ducks would battle back for a late-half surge, going on a 17-4 run to end the first.
Gibbons' 13 first-half points on 4-of-6 from three-point range led Utah to a 28-27 advantage at the break. The Duck defense held Utah's leading scorer, Lauren Beckman, to just four points in the first half. The Utes hit five three-pointers in the first half while limiting Oregon to one. The Ducks outscored Utah in the paint 10-4 in the first.
Oregon carried its momentum into the second half and took its first lead of the game at the 16-minute mark. With tough defense and a productive offensive output, the Ducks would not relinquish. The Utes suffered a major setback with an injury to Beckman, who sprained her knee and was forced to leave the game.
The Ducks' defensive pressure in the backcourt led to 11 steals while the frontcourt blocked seven Utah shots in the game. Oregon scored 17 points off of turnovers to proceed to 63-55 win over the Utes. The Utes shot 5-of-12 from the free throw line, while the Ducks were a perfect 14-14.
"Their quickness was the difference," coach Elaine Elliott said. "Their guards played good defense, knocking the ball away and getting steals. They created transition opportunities and were able to score."
Gibbons finished with a game high 20 points and added three assists. Lindsay Herbert scored 10 points in the second half to finish with 12 and six rebounds. Beckman finished with eight points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes of play.
Oregon's Shaquala Williams scored 19 points and added five boards and three assists. Center Alyssa Fredrick finished with 14 points and seven boards.
The Utes will continue their road stand, playing the next five games on the road. The Utes will head to Ogden to take on Weber State on Dec. 17 and then take to the road to play Nevada on Dec. 19 and Montana on Dec. 21.
