COMING UP: The Utes will travel to Reno, Nev., facing the Nevada Wolf Pack on Wed., Dec. 19 at 7:00 p.m. On Fri., Dec. 21, Utah will take on Montana at 7:35 p.m. in Missoula, Mont.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH: The Utes are currently 5-3 overall, 0-0 in MWC play. The women's basketball team defeated the Weber State Wildcats, 72-65 on the road in Ogden, Utah on Mon., Dec. 17. Previously, the Utes lost to the Oregon Ducks, 63-55 on the road in Eugene, Ore., on Sat., Dec. 8.
The Utes return three starters and nine letterwinners from a team which posted a perfect 14-0 league record and a 28-4 overall mark. Utah, which led the nation in scoring defense and made its 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament a year ago, has won or shared the conference title each of the past six years. The Utes add four newcomers to the roster this season.
Possible starters for the Utes in the match-up with Nevada and Montana are: Erin Gibbons (Sr., G), Katherine McColl (Sr., F), Kelsy Stireman (So., G), Lindsay Herbert (Sr., G/F) and Lauren Beckman (Sr., F/C). Utah's 2000-01 final RPI ranking, produced by the NCAA, was 12th out of 316 teams. The Mountain West Conference was 7th out of 32 conferences.
SERIES SHORTS: Utah leads the series with Nevada, 3-0. Utah defeated the Wolf Pack, 62-58, in the last meeting on Dec. 9, 2000 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 2-0 at home, 1-0 away and 0-0 at a neutral site vs. Nevada. Montana leads the series with Utah, 10-6. In the last meeting on Dec. 7, 2000, the Utes defeated the Lady Griz, 67-49 in Salt Lake City. Utah is 5-3 at home, 1-6 away and 0-1 at a neutral site vs. Montana.
QUOTING ELLIOTT: On the upcoming Nevada and Montana games- "We seem extremely comfortable at home and not so much on the road. Our challenge now will be to find that comfort zone. We have to keep perfecting things and keep improving in order to be successful."
UP NEXT: Utah will travel to Stockton, Calif. to match-up with Pacific on Fri., Dec. 28, at 7:00 p.m. (PST). The Utes will face San Francisco on Sun., Dec. 30 at 2:00 p.m. in San Francisco, Calif. After the first of the year, Utah will be back in action at home facing Wyoming to open Mountain West Conference action on Thurs., Jan. 10 at 7:00 p.m. On Sat., Jan. 12, the Utes will host Colorado State at 3:30 p.m. Utah will hit the road again on Thurs., Jan. 17, meeting the Air Force Falcons at 7:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Utes will take on New Mexico on Sat., Jan 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Albuquerque, N.M.
SCOUTING NEVADA: The University of Nevada-Reno women's basketball team is currently 3-4 on the season. Most recently, the Wolfpack lost to USC, 86-48. on Sat., Dec. 15 in Los Angeles, Calif. Previously, Nevada lost to the UNLV Rebels on Sat., Dec. 8, in Reno, Nev.
Junior point guard Laura Ingham leads the conference in assists. She has 41 total assists and a 5.86 assist per game average. Nevada as a team leads the league in assists with 116 and 16.43 assists per game. Ingham is also sixth in the conference in steals with 2.14 steals per game. Kate Smith is seventh in scoring with a 13.4 points per game average. She also third in three-point shooting percentage with 46.7 percent. Katie Golomb is ninth in scoring with 12.6 points per game and tenth in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per game. Freshman Amber Stimac had 12 points and five rebounds against Colorado State. She shot 6-of-13 from the field. April Bankston has made a big contribution in rebounding. She is second on the team with 5.5 rebound average. Ingrid Johnson is also having an outstanding season for the Wolf Pack. She is averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds over the first six games.
Head coach Ada Gee has a 98-123 overall record at Nevada in eight seasons. Gee has a 100-124 career record in nine years of coaching.
NEVADA PROBABLE STARTERS: #12 Ashley Bastian (Jr., G), #13 Laura Ingham (Jr., G), #20 Crystal Williams (Sr., G), #24 Katie Golomb (Sr., G/F) and #50 Kate Smith (Jr., C/F).
SCOUTING MONTANA: The Weber State women's basketball team is currently 8-2 on the season. Most recently, the Lady Griz lost in the Mississippi State Tournament championship game to its host MSU, 78-73 on Sun., Dec. 16. Previously, Montana shut-down Houston, 93-72, at the Mississippi State Tournament on Sat., Dec. 15.
Leading the Lady Griz is senior Cheryl Keller. She is poised to move up several UM career charts. She is 269 points shy of becoming the 21st Lady Griz to score 1,000 career points. Keller leads the team with 13 treys. Laura Valley is fifth on the team in scoring at 7.2 points per game and second in rebounding at 6.2 boards per game. Freshmen Hollie Tyler and Crystal Baird are proving to be a formidable one-two punch at the center position. The 6-foot-3 duo are combining to average 21 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.
Robin Selvig is the dean of women's basketball coaches in the Big Sky Conference. Selvig is now in his 24th season on the sidelines with the Lady Griz. Selvig has a career record of 536-148.
MONTANA PROBABLE STARTERS: #23 Brooklynn Lorenzen (So., G), #12 Cheryl Keller (Sr., G), #55 Julie Deming (Jr., F), #43 Simarron Schildt (Sr., F/C), #50 Hollie Tyler (Fr., F/C).
HEAD COACH ELAINE ELLIOTT: The winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott has kept the winning tradition alive since earning the head coaching position in 1983-84. She has posted a 379-155 (.710) career record in 18 seasons. In the last 11 years alone, Elliott has guided the Utes to nine 20-win seasons, six 1st-place, three 2nd-place and two 3rd-place finishes in conference play. Overall, Elliott has led the Utes to thirteen 20-win seasons and three 19-win seasons, averaging 20 wins per season. Elliott was named the 1999-2000 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 2000-01 IKON/WBCA Division I District 7 Coach of the Year, the 1999-2000 inaugural Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and the 2000-01 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. Last season, Elliott led the Utes to a first-ever NCAA "Sweet 16" tournament appearance.
Most recently, Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
ELLIOTT APPROACHES 400TH CAREER WIN: Utah's winningest coach in school history, Elaine Elliott is quickly approaching her 400th career win. Elliott needs 21 more wins and with 19 games left, the Mountain West Conference Tournament and a possible trip to the NCAAs, she could very well hit the mark.
ELLIOTT NOTCHES 375TH CAREER WIN: Elliott recorded her 375th career win with a 77-54 victory over Butler University on Sun., Nov. 18 in Minneapolis, Minn.
UTAH RANKINGS IN THE MWC: Utah, as a team is leads the MWC in 3-point field foal percentage defense (.224), field goal percentage defense (.313), scoring defense (52.3) and defensive rebounds (29.57). The Utes are second in rebounding offense (42.0), rebounding defense (35.6) and blocked shots (3.57). Utah is third in 3-point field goals made (6.6) and scoring margin (+16.1), and are fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.400) and field goal percentage (.441). Utah is fourth in assists (16.86), assist/turnover ratio (1.08), and are fifth in offensive rebounds (12.43). The Utes are sixth in scoring offense (68.4), seventh in free-throw percentage (.693), and eighth in turnover margin (-1.50) and steals (5.29). Individually, seven Utah players rank among the top 20 in the MWC statistical leaders.
BECK BREAKING THROUGH: Lauren Beckman recorded her 1,000th career point on Sat., Nov. 17 at the Gopher Basketball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. Beckman scored 22 points against Santa Clara in the season-opener for the Utes. Currently Beckman has racked up 1,127 career points. She became only one of seventeen other 1,000-point-plus scorers in Utah women's basketball history.
GIBBIE IS GOLDEN: Erin Gibbons is approaching her 1,000th career point. Gibbons has 666 career points and needs 334 points to hit the mark. With 19 games 19 games left, the Mountain West Conference Tournament and a possible trip to the NCAAs, she could very well hit the mark.
HERBIE HITS FROM DOWNTOWN: Lindsay Herbert has been hitting the three-point shot 57 percent of the time this season. In eight games this season, Herbert has made 12-of-21 from behind the arc. She is 65-of-177 (37 percent) during her career at the U.
UTES CAN NAIL THE THREE: For the past few years, the Utes have had the hot hand from behind the arc. In 1999-2000, Utah was fourth in the nation 3-point field goal percentage (40.1%) and 24th in 3-point field goals made per game (6.5 per game). This year is no different. Utah currently shoots 41.4 percent (53-of-128) from three-point range and averages 6.6 treys per game.
DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE: Utah basketball has always been known for its tenacious defense. In 2000-01, Utah led the nation in scoring defense, holding its opponents to an average of 51.1 points per game. The U. outscored its opponents by an average of 15.8 points a game, ranking seventh in the nation in scoring margin. Utah's defense was again superior in 1999-2000 as opponents were held to just 52.2 points per game. The Utes were 19th in the nation in scoring margin, outscoring its opponents by an average of 13.0 points per game.
This season, Utah has held its opponents to just 53.9 points per game and has outscored its opponents by 15.0 points a game. Opponents are shooting just .254 from three-point range and .323 from the field, when facing Utah.
GOPHER BASKETBALL CLASSIC ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Senior Lauren Beckman was selected to the 2001 Gopher Basketball Classic All-Tournament team. On the weekend, Beckman racked up double-doubles both nights, 17 points 11 rebounds against Santa Clara, and 22 points 12 rebounds against Butler.
WEBER STATE GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team defeated the Weber State Wildcats, 72-65 on the road in Ogden, Utah on Mon., Dec. 17.
After an ugly first half, the Utes settled in and stepped up offensively. In the second half, Utah shot 54 percent from the field, 50 percent from behind the arc and 80 percent at the free-throw line. Free-throws were key for Weber State in the second half, but it was not enough. The Wildcats went to the line 24 times compared to the Utes, which had just 15 attempts in the game. Weber State tied the game at 41-41 with 15:06 left to go in the game, but it was the closest they would get as the Utes went on to win.
For Utah, senior Lindsay Herbert racked up 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc. Lauren Beckman totaled 16 points and six rebounds. Beckman shot 7-of-10 from the field and 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Carley Marshall notched 13 points and led the team on the boards with seven rebounds. Senior Erin Gibbons added 11 points on the night. As a team, Utah went 27-of-53 from the field, 7-of-13 from the three-point line and 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Stephanie Stanger racked up 17 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats. She was 4-of-9 from the field, 3-of-4 from behind the arc and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Kris Clyder-Gardner totaled 15 points and teammate Crystal Howe posted 13 points and 11 boards. As a team, Weber State shot 42 percent (20-of-48) from the field, 55 percent (6-of-11) from three-point range and 79 percent (19-of-24) from the free-throw line.
"We played a very good Weber State team tonight and I am pleased with the win on the road," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "We certainly have a lot to work on, but we're going to move forward. I thought our bench played very well tonight and helped give us the offensive boost that we needed."
OREGON GAME RECAP: The University of Utah women's basketball team fell to 4-3 on the season with a 63-55 loss to the Oregon Ducks at McArthur Court on Saturday.
Tough defensive pressure by the Ducks forced Utah to the perimeter early in the game. Utah senior guard Erin Gibbons started to heat up under the pressure, hitting the outside shots to give the Utes a 24-10 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. The Ducks would battle back for a late-half surge, going on a 17-4 run to end the first.
Gibbons' 13 first-half points on 4-of-6 from three-point range led Utah to a 28-27 advantage at the break. The Duck defense held Utah's leading scorer, Lauren Beckman, to just four points in the first half. The Utes hit five three-pointers in the first half while limiting Oregon to one. The Ducks out-scored Utah in the paint 10-4 in the first.
Oregon carried its momentum into the second half and took its first lead of the game at the 16-minute mark. With tough defense and a productive offensive output, the Ducks would not relinquish. The Utes suffered a major setback with an injury to Beckman, who sprained her knee and was forced to leave the game.
The Ducks' defensive pressure in the backcourt led to 11 steals while the frontcourt blocked seven Utah shots in the game. Oregon scored 17 points off of turnovers to proceed to 63-55 win over the Utes. The Utes shot 5-of-12 from the free throw line, while the Ducks were a perfect 14-14.
"Their quickness was the difference," coach Elaine Elliott said. "Their guards played good defense, knocking the ball away and getting steals. They created transition opportunities and were able to score."
Gibbons finished with a game high 20 points and added three assists. Lindsay Herbert scored 10 points in the second half to finish with 12 and six rebounds. Beckman finished with eight points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes of play.
Oregon's Shaquala Williams scored 19 points and added five boards and three assists. Center Alyssa Fredrick finished with 14 points and seven boards.
MWC PRE-SEASON POLL: Utah, defending MWC regular season champion, placed second in the MWC preseason media poll with five first-place votes. Colorado State ranked first, BYU ranked third, followed by UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, San Diego State and Air Force. Utah senior Lauren Beckman was picked as to the MWC preseason all-conference team.
UTES ON THE RADIO/TV: Utah women's basketball is back on KALL 910-AM this season. KALL will carry 20 regular-season games and all post-season contests live. Clear Channel is in the third year of a four-year contract as the exclusive radio home of University of Utah sports.
Anchoring the broadcast team is KALL-910 AM Sports Director Brad Stone. Stone will broadcast the women's home games, while Kent Rupe will call the road games
As part of its agreement with the University of Utah, KJZZ-TV televised the Utah-UCLA game on Dec. 1 and is scheduled to televise the Utah-BYU game on Jan. 26 live from the Huntsman Center. KJZZ is also tentatively scheduled to televise one of the Utes' games in the MWC Tournament.
Veteran sportscaster Steve Brown will call the Ute women's basketball games on KJZZ.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE: The newest conference in the nation has quickly emerged as one of the best. The Mountain West Conference, which officially commenced operation on July 1, 1999, sent two basketball teams to NCAA post-season play and one team to the WNIT in its first year. The Mountain West Conference saw five out of the eight schools compete in either the NCAAs or the WNIT last season. League champion Utah made it to the NCAA "Sweet 16," Colorado State made it to the NCAA Second Round, while UNLV, New Mexico and BYU were all WNIT participants.
