SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (3-3-1) won its second straight game, dominating Nevada (2-4) 6-0 at Ute Field.
Utah controlled every aspect of the game, out shooting Nevada 21-3, while playing a majority of the contest on its opposition's half of the field. The Utes spread the wealth on the scoreboard, as six different players tallied a goal, including two first-time career goals. Freshman Heather Wilhelm notched her first goal as a Ute only 2:20 into the game on a corner kick fed from sophomore Maren Harper. Freshman Lisa Vasconcellos also posted a career first in the 40th minute to make the game 2-0 on a ball from Harper, who one-touched a pass from sophomore Sandi Fouts. Fouts followed her assist with a goal 25 seconds later. Freshmen Missy Dennis and Bobbie Benegas combined on the assist. Sophomore Kim Naylor started the second half scoring in the 53rd minute. Harper hit another good cross to sophomore Jen Williams in the 65th minute for her third assist of the game. Sophomore Shauna Gurr capped the scoring in the 78th minute with a goal from sophomore Katie Tate. Goalkeepers sophomore Courtney Hills and Freshman Lynnsey Asay combined on the shutout for Utah.
San Diego comes to Ute Field Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
"Our starters lacked intensity in the first half," said Coach Amy Winslow. "The second string came in and did a great job. I was happy with the spread out of our scoring. A lot of people had a scoring tally. Our communication, shape and intensity were a lot better in the second half."
