Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women's basketball team continued its win streak with a 62-58, victory over Nevada at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Sat., Dec. 9. The Utes improve to 8-0 overall, 0-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Nevada drops to 3-4 overall.
Utah struggled to make shots late in the second half, but managed to pull out the win. Both Nevada and the Utes turned the ball over 21 times and Utah shot well under its field goal and three-point field goal percentage. The Utes out-rebounded the Wolf Pack, 38-31 and racked up 14 assists, 10 steals and seven blocks.
For the Utes, senior Kristina Andersen posted her first double-double of the season, racking up 15 points and 10 boards. Junior Lauren Beckman tallied 13 points and nine rebounds and teammate Amy Ewert added 10 points. Beckman went 3-of-8 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Whitney Sutak added 11 points in 24 minutes, scoring eight points in the second half alone. Utah went 18-of-48 (38 percent) from the field, 6-of-19 (32 percent) from three-point range and 20-of-31 (65 percent) from the free-throw line.
For the Wolf Pack, Angie Heer notched 20 points, scoring 11 points in the second half. Heer went 7-of-14 from the field and 5-of-9 from behind the arc. Teammate Kate Smith totaled 16 points and shot 6-of-13 from the field and 4-of-8 from the free-throw line. Ashlee Orndorff led the Wolf Pack with nine boards. Nevada shot 41 percent from the field (21-of-51), 38 percent from behind the arc (6-of-16) and 63 percent from the free-throw line (10-of-16).
"I liked us a lot better about three games ago, and I am not pleased with how we are playing right now," said Head Coach Elaine Elliott. "We made too many mistakes on defense, there was a lack of focus on our part and we need to improve our mental game. Basically, it is the mental part of the game and I think we take turns stepping up. Leadership is a problem, I am not getting enough communication from my seniors and that hurts us. They've got to step up, we didn't look good tonight and we didn't look good last night either. We have been playing about five minutes a game of true intense basketball and they'll find out that its not enough." said Elliott.
