SALT LAKE CITY - Utah's Johan Nystrom has set a precedent in the WAC pool lanes and looks to make an impact in international waters. Nystrom, a swimmer from Skellefta, Sweden, was selected for the Swedish national team last fall allowing him the chance to compete in the 2000 Olympics in Australia. He was selected for the team based on times swam here at Utah where specializes in the 200 and 100 free.
Before coming to Utah, Nystrom was already accustomed to the international scene. He was the 1997 Swedish National champion in the 200 IM and was a World Cup finalist in the 100 IM. He was the Northern Swedish record holder in the 100 free and 200 IM in 1996. Nystrom has been alternating his training regimen between the two teams. During the summer and over Christmas break, he practices with the Swedish team in Australia and then works with the Utes during the school year.
The extra work has paid off in the college lanes, this season, Nystrom has led the Utes in the 200 free (1:37.96) and 100 free (44.42) and has been an integral part of the U. relay teams. He qualified automatically for the 1999 NCAA Championships in both events and is ranked first in the WAC in the 200.
Last season, Nystrom finished second in the 1998 Western Athletic Conference Championships in the 100 and 200 free. According to Ute Head Coach Dennis Tesch, Nystrom has the potential of winning the 200, 100 and 50 freestyle events at the WAC Championships this year.
"Johan is an incredible young man. He put tremendous amounts of effort toward swimming, but also values the educational opportunities he's been given," says Tesch. "Johan is a great motivator and the team loves to watch him swim. He puts confidence in the team as someone who can win events. He is someone who will attain success because he has the dedication to be the best."
