SAN DIEGO - The Utah women's soccer team was knocked out of the Mountain West Conference Championship in a 4-3 loss to Brigham Young. The Cougars outshot the Utes 22-10, keeping a shots on goal ration to 14-6.
Brigham Young pounded the Utes in the first half of the game, leading 3-0 going into the half. The Utes were further hampered in the first by a red card given to freshman defender Jen Williams. The card was issued after a goal scare where Ute keeper Courtney Hills was lured from the box. A Cougar forward took a shot and Williams deflected the ball with her hand. The action resulted in a penalty kick giving BYU a shutout first half.
With the loss of Williams, the Utes took field in the second half short one player. The challenge revitalized the Utes however and they quickly brought the score back with in one point scoring two goals.
Shauna Gurr ripped off her fourth goal of the tournament on an unassisted shot when she slipped up her Cougar defender for a shot. Senior Staci Burt scored the Utes second goal off a throw-in. Midfielder Amy Kofoed put the ball into play with a flip throw-in giving Burt the cross for a shot.
BYU came back to score a fourth goal in the 67th minute, but the Utes answered back scoring a third goal in the 75th. Freshman Katie Tate scored an unassisted goal when she took the ball from midfield and dribbled through the BYU defense.
All-MWC goalkeeper Courtney Hills finishes up her freshman season with a 13-7 record. She allowed four goals and ten saves in the game.
