Ute Play
The Utah women's soccer team travels to San Diego, Calif., Nov. 3-6, to compete in the first-ever Mountain West Conference Championships. The Utes finish the 1999 season with a 12-6, 5-1 conference record. The record ranks the Utes first in the conference, sharing their MWC title with co-champions Brigham Young and San Diego State.
Ute Notes
The Utes enter the MWC Championship with the third seed. In their first match-up, the Utes face No. 6 New Mexico who they dominated 1-0 during the regular season. Utah is second in the conference with only 17 goals allowed and 119 shots. The Utes are third with 79 points and 30 goals and are fourth with 19 assists.
Utes to Watch
Ute scoring leader Amy Kofoed leads the Utes with 13 goals and one assist for 27 points. The midfielder leads the MWC in goals, game-winning goals (5) and shots (78). She is third in overall points. Kofoed was named the MWC Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 19-25. She helped the Utes to a double victory over Montana (1-0) and Washington State (3-1) at the Diadora Cup Sept. 17-19.
As a senior this season, Staci Burt added to her team career records scoring 37 goals, 18 assists and 92 points in her collegiate career. Finishing up the 1999 season, Burt is second on the team in scoring with six goals, four assists and 16 points. She is ranked third in the MWC with 62 shots. She is ninth in points and goals and is 10th in assists.
Freshman Shauna Gurr is third on the team with five goals and 10 points. The forward is fifth in the conference with 57 shots. Gurr was named the MWC Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 4-8 after she scored a goal in each of Utah's 3-0 victory over Weber State and 2-1 loss to SMU.
Goalkeeper Courtney Hills leads the conference with seven shutouts. The freshman has started 17 games, playing 1,587 minutes. She has made 101 saves and allowed only 17 goals for a .96 goals against average. Hills is ranked second in the MWC in saves and third in goals against.
Defender Lesa Zollinger looks to make an impact during conference play. The freshman has played in 15 games, jumping into the Ute starting lineup mid-way through the season. Zollinger has made a tremendous impact with her aggressive playing style and quick ball handling skills. She has made two crucial team saves for the Utes this season as well as guarding some of the oppositions toughest forwards.
Recent Results
Several Utah women's soccer players sat out the final regular season contest against Long Beach State, and the Forty-Niners took advantage of the injury depleted squad with a 1-0 victory.
The Utes surrendered a goal to LBSU's Kelli Barrett in the 24th minute. The Forty-Niner goalkeeper, Jihan Elgazzar held off a late surge by the Utes that escalated in an Amy Kofoed shot off the bar in the waning minutes.
The game capped the regular season careers of Ute seniors Staci Burt, the all-time Utah scoring leader, Tonya Dansereau, Dana Bolton and Bernie Hogan.
Scouting the Opponents
In Utah's first tournament game, the Utes face New Mexico. The Lobos end the 1999 season with a 6-12-1 record, going 1-5 in the conference. UNM is ranked fourth in the conference in goals (25) and is fifth in assists (14), goals allowed (34), points (64) and shots (214).
The winner of the Utah-New Mexico game will then move onto play the victor in the Brigham Young-Wyoming game. BYU leads the conference in shots (476), goals (64), assists (56), goals allowed (14) and points (184). The No. 2 seed is 14-5 on the season with a 5-1 conference record. Wyoming enters the tournament ranked seventh with a 4-13-1 record and a 1-5 MWC mark.
