SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's soccer team opens Mountain West Conference play Wed., Oct. 6 at 4:00 p.m. when they host New Mexico. The Utes then travel to Provo, Utah, to take-on Brigham Young Sat., Oct. 9 at 8:00 p.m.
Utes to Watch
Freshman Shauna Gurr led the Utes over the weekend with two goals. The forward helped the Utes to a 3-0 victory over Weber State when she slammed a pass from defender Megan Maxwell for a 20-yard goal. Against SMU, Gurr brought the Utes back into the game with an unassisted goal to tie the score 1-1 (the Utes fell to the Mustangs 2-1). Overall, Gurr is third on the team with four goals and eight points.
Midfielder Amy Kofoed leads the Utes with nine goals and 18 points. The sophomore scored her ninth goal against Weber State when she sped through the Wildcat defense for a 15-yard breakaway shot. It is Kofoed's fourth unassisted goal this season.
Senior forward Staci Burt is second on the team with 11 points. She has four goals and three assists. The 1998 team scoring leader continues to build upon her team career goal and point records: she tops the record books with 35 goals and 87 points.
Goalkeeper Courtney Hills adds another shutout to her record with a 3-0 victory over Weber State. In 11 games played, Hills has played an astonishing 1,047 minutes. She has 72 saves and has allowed 15 goals. She boasts a goals-against average of 1.29.
Defender Lesa Zollinger continues to dominate the opposition. The freshman, who has earned a spot on the Ute starting line-up, produced another team save against Weber State. Zollinger now has two team saves on her belt as the Utes enter Mountain West Conference play. Freshman defender Megan Maxwell also earned a team wave against the Wildcats.
Ute Notes
Utah is 7-4 this season despite playing one of the hardest non-conference schedules to date. The Utes have played four nationally ranked teams in Texas A& M (eighth), Brigham Young (12th), Michigan (15th) and SMU (25th). Utah also plays regionally ranked Colorado (seventh, central region) and San Diego State (eighth, west region).
So far this season, the Utes have overpowered their competitors in both the scoring and shooting columns. Utah has outscored the opponents 21-15, scoring 58 percent of the season's total goals. The Utes have also outshot the competition 208-156, taking 57 percent of the season's shots.
Recent Results
Utah defeated Weber State in a 3-0 shutout today. The Utes outshot the Wildcats 35-9 including 20-5 shots-on-goal. The win brings Utah to 7-3 and ties the Utah-Weber State series 2-2.
The Utes dominated the first half shooting 12 of 15 shots-on-goal and keeping the Wildcats to four of five. The score remained 0-0 going into the second half, when Utah hit a scoring spree shooting three goals in 15 minutes.
Amy Kofoed, Shauna Gurr and Staci Burt all scored for the Utes, with assists by Megan Maxwell and Alli Cerruti.
Utah battled to a 2-1 loss to SMU on Sun., Oct. 3. SMU led the game 1-0 at the half. The Mustangs started the game off strong scoring its first goal in the first five minutes of the game. SMU midfielder Nicole Lamb passed a ball through the Ute defense allowing forward Tara Comfort to steam a break away for a five-yard shot.
The two teams fought through the rest of the first half with a 1-0 score until Ute forward Shauna Gurr brought Utah back into the game. The freshman slammed 15-yard unassisted goal to tie the score 1-1.
The Utes were unable to hold onto the tie however, SMU scored the game-winning goal with under three minutes of play when Comfort scored her second goal of the game on a 35-yard unassisted shot.
Scouting the Opponents
New Mexico is 5-6-1 coming into conference play. The Lobos finished the 1998 season 4-13-2, with a 2-4 Western Athletic Conference record. In their last match-up, the Lobos defeated the Utes 2-0 in 1997. Utah and New Mexico are tied 1-1 in series play.
Brigham Young is 11-1 this season with its only loss to No. 7 ranked Southern California (2-1). The Cougars are currently ranked 12th in the NSCAA national poll and tied for second in the regional poll. BYU has outscored the competition 41-11 averaging 3.72 goals per game. The Cougars finished the 1998 campaign 20-5 with a ninth-place national ranking. In conference play, BYU was 13-1 placing second in the WAC Pacific Division. In the Utah-BYU series, BYU leads 5-0.
