Track & Field
Riley Campbell enters his first season as an assistant coach and third as the director of operations heading into the 2025-26 season with the Utah cross country and track & field programs.
In his two seasons, the Women of Utah have qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships both times. Meanwhile, the DMR team ran the sixth-fastest time in NCAA history (all-conditions) before finishing fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn All-America honors in 2024-25.Â
That same success carried over to the outdoor season where Utah saw a record number of qualifiers compete at NCAA West Regionals in 2025. That campaign culminated with McKaylie Caesar and Morgan Jensen becoming Utah’s first duo to compete in the 10000m at NCAA Championships while the 4x100m relay squad competed at the championships for the first time in program history.
Campbell arrived in SLC with a great deal of experience after spending four seasons (2019-23) at Gonzaga where he served as an assistant coach. While in Spokane, Wash., Campbell worked primarily with the men’s program assisting the head coach with workout preparation, instructions and meetings. In addition to his coaching duties, he also managed the operational side planning travel and recruiting visits along with administrative responsibilities.
During his time with the Bulldogs, the distance team took second in three of the four years he was on staff at the conference meet and earned an NCAA Championships berth in three of those four seasons as well. The same success was evident for the distance squad on the track with James Mwaura earning the sixth All-America award of his career after grabbing two at the outdoor championships in 2023.
In total, the Bulldogs had eight NCAA All-Regional honorees (XC), 11 All-West Coast Conference recipients and 15 NCAA West Regional qualifiers during his time at Gonzaga.
Campbell ran collegiately at Boise State from 2014-19 on the distance team, helping the Broncos advance to the NCAA Championships in 2016 and 2018 – including a sixth-place finish as a team in 2018. The Maple Valley, Wash., native was critical in helping the Broncos secure a top-10 team finish when he crossed the finish line in 44th (30:02.2) as the team’s second scorer. He also had a strong career showing at the Mountain West Championships, recording a top-25 finish in three of his four years at Boise State in cross country. Additionally, Campbell also led the Broncos to two MWC titles in 2016 and 2018.
The Washington native closed his collegiate career on a high-note, placing third in the 10k at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships with a mark of 30:45.66 to earn all-conference honors. Campbell also posted a personal best time of 29:20.06 in the 10k at the Stanford Invitational earlier in the season.
Campbell graduated Boise State with a degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on exercise science in 2019 before obtaining his master’s in sport & athletic Administration from Gonzaga in 2023.
