LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Utah track & field team saw a pair of its 10k runners secure top-5 finishes while a pair of its 1500m runners advanced to the finals on opening day of the 2025 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Rock Chalk Park.
Â
The 1500m prelims were a lot slower than expected but the Utes were able to send two onto the finals between
Erin Vringer (4:48.82) and
Millie Wilcox (4:32.42) – both of which earned an automatic spot after earning a top-two finish in their respective sections.
Lauren Ayers clocked in at 4:34.19 competing in her first conference championships meet while
Katarzyna Nowakowska posted a 4:35.65 in her first race of the year after battling an injury all spring.
Â
Freshman
Chelsea Amoah took second in her heat, but her run of 23.36 was .06 shy of earning a spot in the 200m dash finals based on time.
Â
The 400m hurdles saw
Bailey Kealamakia take third in her heat with a run of 59.01 while freshman
Lela Divinity finished in 1:05.88 with neither advancing to the finals on Saturday.
Â
In the final event of the night, Utah's trio of
Morgan Jensen,
Clara Mayfield and
Lindsey Peters led the pack for the first 1600m before Cincinnati's Claire Curstinger joined the mix in the top-4. The trio continued to pace the race and led 1-2-3 through 3200m of action.
Â
Things would move around a bit by the time the runners got to the 4800m mark, but Jensen was still leading the pack at that point in the race. The Sandy, Utah, product conceded the lead by the time she got to the 8000m mark, but didn't let up and ran away with the runner-up finish at 33:47.03 and secured eight points for Utah.
Â
Meanwhile,
Anna Peters made her move with less than 1000m left to go to jump two spots to finish fifth-overall in her first-career 10,000m race with a time of 33:56.08. Her fifth-place finish would give Utah an additional four points and close out with 12 points after the first day of action.
Clara Mayfield would give Utah its third top-10 finisher of the race after finishing in 10th with a run of 34:23.21.
Â
Earlier in the day, sophomore
Rachel Bair kicked things off in the heptathlon with the 100m hurdles. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native would win her section with a PR run of 14.94. In the second event of the day, Bair closed out the high jump with her best leap of 1.42m (4-7.75) in her third attempt.
Â
Bair once again saved the best for last and posted her best mark of the day in her third and final attempt for 10.60m (34-9.5) – which was good for a new personal best in the shot put. She would follow up with yet another PR, this time in the 200m dash after crossing the finish line at 24.67.
