SALT LAKE CITY– The Utah Golf team got off to a strong start at the Mark Simpson Invitational tying for fifth place after 36 holes of golf, while its four single players wrapped up at the Les Fowler Individual.

Utah's starting five collectively finished the day at 9-under (543), going 3-under (277) in round one and 6-under (266) in round two.

Sergio Jimenez led the charge in round one carding 2-under (68) with Gabriel Palacios and Jack Jerge hot on his heels each posting a 1-under (69). Ivan Enguita and Rex Wilson wrapped up the round at 1-over (71) and 2-over (72).

The second round belonged to Palacios who ripped off an impressive 4-under (66) to finish the day. Jimenez added a 3-under (67) to his earlier work, while Jerge finished up with a 2-under (68). Wilson went 4-over (74) to end day one at the Mark Simpson Invitational and Enguita carded 6-over (76).

Palacios and Jimenez ended the day tied for a piece of seventh place, each posting a 5-under total through two rounds, while Jerge tied for 16^th after going 3-under through both rounds of play.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS
Play will resume on Wednesday, Sep. 30 with an additional 18 holes and staggered starting times starting at 7:30 a.m., off both holes 1 and 10.

Mark Simpson served as the Colorado Buffaloes golf head coach for 29 years (1977-2005), until he passed away at the age of 55 on Dec. 5, 2005; he was inducted earlier that year into the GCAA Hall of Fame.

The Mark Simpson Invitational was created by current CU head coach Roy Edwards in his honor beginning in 2010.

Les Fowler preceded Simpson as head coach, also for 29 years (1948-1976) before retiring; he is in both the CU Athletic Hall of Fame, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.

The individual event, the first of which occurred in 2019 between individuals from Air Force, CU, CSU, DU and UNC is named in his honor.
