Utes Beat Pioneers 4-1 with Strong Singles Performances

SALT LAKE CITY— The University of Utah women's tennis team battled against Denver University Sunday afternoon, Feb. 15 at the George S. Tennis Center. The Utes won 4-1over the Pioneers after posting strong singles performances. The Utes are now 6-1 on the season.

DOUBLES
In doubles action, Utah's Sara Akid and Emmie Moore finished strong with a 6-4 victory over Denver's Yunfei Cai and Louise Wikander at the No. 2 spot.

However, Denver would ultimately claim the doubles points after strong performances on courts No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point.

SINGLES
Despite not having the point advantage going into singles action, all Utes picked up a first set win in their individual matches. Utah's Emma Kamper defeated Denver's Wikander, 6-1, 6-2, on court No. 1 to give the Utes the 1-1 tie in the overall match.

The Utes' momentum continued as Akid had a strong 6-1, 6-3 performance over Denver's Zoe Adkins at the No. 4 spot.

Kaila Barksdale fought hard on court No. 3 after picking up a first set win, 6-2, and finished the job, 7-5 in the second set after Denver's Natalie Cinkova battled back to force extra games. Barksdale's win put the Utes up 3-1 over the Pioneers.

All eyes were on court No. 2 as Utah's Moore and Denver's Marley Lambert went into a second set tiebreak. Moore took the first set 6-4, and would fight to take the second set, 7-6(6) to clinch the overall match victory for the Utes.

The rest of the matches went unfinished.

The Utes are now 6-1 on the season.

UP NEXT
The Utes will travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies (Feb. 20) and San Deigo Toreros (Feb. 21) before conference play begins.
