Utes Defeat Cougars 4-3 to Extend Hot Streak

SALT LAKE CITY— The University of Utah women's tennis team defeated the Washington State Cougars 4-3 this Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes are now 5-1 on the season.

DOUBLES
In doubles action, Utah's Dylan Lolofie and Andjelija Markovic had a hot start defeating the Washington State duo Martina Puvill and Ava-Monet Sycamore, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.

All eyes were on courts No. 1 and No. 2 for the ultimate doubles point as both matches were tied at 5-5.

At the No. 2 spot, Utah's Sara Akid and Emmie Moore finished strong, defeating Washington State's Eva Alvarez Sande and Yura Nakagawa 7-5 to clinch the doubles point.

At the No. 1 spot, Utah duo Emma Kamper and Emma Valletta finished not even a minute later with a 7-5 victory over Washington State's Chisato Kanemaki and Maxine Murphy.

SINGLES
Utah's Akid opened the singles action for the Utes with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Puvill at the No. 4 spot.

The Washington State Cougars would go on to pick up two points on courts No. 6 and No. 2 to tie the match at 2-2. However, the Utes pushed through as Utah's Valletta picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Cougars' Kanemaki at the No. 5 spot. This was quickly followed by Utah's Kaila Barksdale clinching the overall match point for the Utes on court No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over WSU's Chisato Nakagama.

The Utes are now 5-1 on the season.

UP NEXT
The Utes will be back in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 15, to play the Denver Pioneers before taking a trip to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies and San Deigo Toreros before conference play begins.
